Left-back Gilbert came through the youth ranks at Birmingham City but made his name at Plymouth Argyle before the Foxes secured his services in the summer of 2005.
He was brought in by Craig Levein to replace the departing Jordan Stewart but it soon became apparent that his future lay elsewhere. His debut came as a substitute at Sheffield United early in that first season but he made only four appearances after that.
With Gilbert quickly out of the equation at the Walkers Stadium, former Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock moved quickly for his services, taking him on-loan to Sheffield Wednesday before then making his deal permanent.
He was also reunited with Sturrock when he moved on to Southend United but didn't really settle at one club, also featuring for Oldham Athletic and Northampton Town.
