Midfielder Jones was handed the tough task of filling Neil Lennon's boots on his arrival at City but his time at the club was hampered by injury, the last of which forced his retirement from the professional game at the age of just 23.
Peter Taylor snapped the Welshman up from Leeds United, where he was a fringe player during the Yorkshire club's European adventures under David O'Leary, but the £3 million price tag, and the fact he was plugging the gap left by the departed Lennon, piled the pressure on him during the early months.
It was lucky he had Robbie Savage beside him, with the pair forming an encouraging midfield partnership for both City and internationally but those signs of encouragement were thwarted when Jones suffered an injury that would keep him sidelined for a year.
He failed to rediscover any kind of form on his return to fitness and Micky Adams made him available for transfer. He spent a pre-season with Nottingham Forest but returned to Leicester with a back injury that would sadly call time on his playing career.
He did return to football in the Welsh Premier League for hometown club Llanelli, playing a role in the club's treble-winning triumph and also studied for his UEFA coaching badges.
