Kitson was born in County Durham but came through City's youth set-up and was dubbed, probably unfortunately, as the next Gary Lineker when he showed early signs of promise as a young forward in City's frontline.
With that weight on his shoulders he failed to produce the required goals-to-games ratio although did produce the club's record outgoing transfer fee when local rivals Derby County came calling and shelled out £1.35 million for his services.
The jet-heeled forward made his debut as a substitute at West Brom at the start of the 1989-90 season and netted in a cup game at Selhurst Park, cementing hopes for a big career at the club for the youngster.
Following his move to Derby Kitson had spells with Newcastle United and West Ham United before embarking on a serious of loan moves.
