DeVille was a veteran of the 'Friendly Fossils' era and he actually played at right-back for Fosse in their first-ever County Cup tie in 1887. But he made his name as a goalkeeper and his performances proved enough to take him onto the Midland League transfer roundabout.
He had two spells playing for Fosse, and also featured for Stoke Wanderers, Leicester Town, Loughborough and Rotherham Town. His former Rotherham team-mates did him no favours when they fired eleven goals past him as DeVille conceded 27 goals in 10 Midland League fixtures.
One of those goals was the first instance of a Fosse own goal at competitive level. In total DeVille made ten appearances in the Midland League for the club.
