The former Charlton Athletic player and England international left-back was a popular figure at the Walkers Stadium, both as a player in the twilight of his successful career, as a coach, and also as a very brief stint as interim manager of the Foxes.
He joined City on a six-month deal in August 2008 and made his debut against Fulham in the League Cup. Powell enjoyed his 750th career appearance wearing a Leicester shirt, playing against former club Southend United in December of that year, and he signed a deal that would keep him at the Walkers until the end of the 2008-09 season.
The left-back signed a player-coach role with the club in July 2009 under Nigel Pearson, and was retained by incoming manager Paulo Sousa. He even took charge alongside Mike Stowell when Sousa was sacked, leading the Foxes to a 3-1 victory over Scunthorpe United. Sven-Goran Eriksson kept him on as coach when he was appointed as manager, but Powell couldn't resist the temptation to manage his former club Charlton Athletic when they came calling.
