Coventry-born Jones started his career with Manchester City before making the switch to City in September 1982. He had to wait a while for his debut but made an instant impression by scoring at Oldham Athletic in May 1983.
The England schoolboy international could only manage 17 City appearances, however, grabbing three goals along the way, and moved on to Walsall four years later before having spells at Kidderminster Harriers, Burton Albion and Rugby.
The striker had the daunting task of standing in for City legend Gary Lineker on his debut at Boundary Park but plugged the gap well, notching the opener in a crucial victory as City bid for promotion, and looked to be heading for a bright future in the game.
He had a good goal ratio at reserve team level but never quite made the grade in the first team and was allowed to leave the club three years after his debut.
