Measham-born Yates leapt up the football pyramid when he joined City from Measham Social Welfare in March 1972. He played for the club mainly as back-up, making just 12 league starts in five years at Filbert Street.
He played as left-back but, after appearances in the Anglo-Italian Cup and Texaco Cup for City, didn't get his debut until two years after his arrival at the club, when he featured as a sub in an away game at Newcastle - his first start came the following season.
A move to Southend United in search of more regular first-team appearances came about and he certainly got what he wanted - playing 254 games for the club, although it was more as a converted defensive midfielder.
Stephen went on to play for Doncaster Rovers, Chesterfield, Darlington and Stockport County.
