Leicester-born Jayes returned from Army services to sign an amateur deal with City and swiftly turning professional to spend two years on City's books.
Injuries offered him a route into first team football at the club but the crisis in the treatment room was so bad that he, and City, struggled - especially at the back. He played just three first team matches for the team before moving on.
Field Mill and Mansfield Town was his next destination and he actually managed 115 league games for the Stags, although he suffered a broken leg in November 1958. Jayes sadly died while playing football for Retail Markets in a local Leicester league at the age of 45.
