Hernon started his career with Mossvale Strollers and actually moved to City during the Second World War. He made 25 appearances for the club during that time, scoring twice, and also made a guest appearance north of the border for Partick Thistle.
The inside-forward made his league debut for the Foxes in June 1947 - five years after his arrival - and went on to score seven goals in 31 league appearances.
Hernon put in a transfer request when challenging Don Revie for his role at Filbert Street and he turned rebellious when the club would only consider a player exchange deal. However, Bolton saw a bid accepted for his services and he moved on.
He spent three years with Wanderers before moving on to Grimsby Town and Watford. He also played for Hastings United and Canterbury City before bringing his playing career to a close.
