Have an automatic with stop/start where the engine goes off when I stop

for fuel efficiency. Its fine for traffic lights etc but it does it even when braking at a standstill for no more than a couple of seconds. Not really ideal for roundabouts or crossroads.

Is there a knack to it? Not sure if I'm just braking too forcefully or anything, or if I can change the sensitivity? I'm a novice driver so hoping the answer is something obvious.

My Clio automatic used to do that too, it drove me insane so I used to turn it off. That might not be the correct answer, but it worked for me :D

Thanks everyone, I've managed to figure out how to switch it off.

My next question is about servicing. My car is 2016, not under warranty. Do I need to go to a dealership or can I go anywhere that says they are a specialist? Hear people say dealerships are a rip offs but slightly concerned about an independent not updating my service history online as it was an absolute pain to get mine in the end once I bought the car.

Should be fine going to any VAT approved garage mate, just make sure they update the service history online or on the cars infotainment system.

Meant to be part ex-ing my old motor tomorrow. Despite having 9 years worth of certificates and receipts and full service record, it looks like I've never had a V5 for it.

The dealership I bought it from taxed it when I bought it and the DVLA send me the V11 every year come VED renewal time so their records must be ok. I know I can request a new one for a cost but will the new dealer take it off me without it?

It turns out the answer is yes, albeit with a £250 quid deposit paid by yours truly, repaid when I actually get my hands on it

Asked the dealership we bought our car from for a quote for a service, full service is due. I expected it to be a fairly high price but £662! There's only a week left on the warranty after the service is due so, it's going local for £400 less. Robbing b@stards!

The dealership we had our previous cars from wasn't as inexpensive as a local garage but was really reasonable.

That's Smart that is!

Thanks - used to have a 140i and been in a 118d since, as I thought I had a new job (with a fairly big commute) that got pulled because of COVID.  I wfh pretty much 100% now so decided to get something fun again.

How did you get on with that Golf @weller54?

It was a bit dodge...12 years MOT history missing on the DVLA website!!... So left that one be 😁..

I've currently got a 2002 Golf MK 4 Anniversary 150tdi which is a great car and a joy to drive... so biding my time to get a R32.

If I survive the first week of driving an automatic for the first time without causing a multi vehicle pile up by forgetting there's no clutch and inadvertantly slamming on the brakes it'll be a minor miracle

You'll get used to it in no time and you'll never go back to a manual :)
