Dames Posted 21 June 2016 Share Posted 21 June 2016 Even if the team has won the league the only way they should be paying 30m is for a 'star' player and an established international from a top team. Its this kind of stupid spending that ended up in Administration a few years ago. Deeney is a good player but 30 million is way too much, especially for a club of our size. Dames Posted 21 June 2016 Share Posted 21 June 2016 Times have changed and we need to keep up with them. They haven't changed so much as in that lower mid table strikers are worth 30 million. The knock on effect from this will be huge as clubs will know we'll pay astronomical amounts for mediocrity.
SecretPro Posted 21 June 2016 Share Posted 21 June 2016 I'm getting less and less interested in what we pay as long as we get AT LEAST one new striker in .... If JV jumps ship (and even if he doesn't) we are going to look a right load of ****s as reigning Prem League champs and in the Champions league with Ulloa and Okazaki as our only real forward line. An extra £5m here or an extra £5m there .... so what, its a sellers market, we're on the back foot, and potential earnings will dwarf those figures anyway. Get in !!!! We need at least 2 strikers, more like 3 if Vardy leaves. Minimum.

Perhaps we have a line of strikers willing to join but we're prioritizing.

There aren't many people on this list that you'd get for less than £30m. I'm not saying he's worth that, it's definitely OTT. But would we be so touchy about paying it for any of the others? He had a big impact last season for Watford with Ighalo. That in a team which by all accounts on the Watford forum, stopped attacking for a large chunk of the season and had little creativity from midfield. If we kept Vardy and Mahrez and played Deeney... we could have three people in the top 10 assists and goals list. You'd cause all sorts of problems for people. Jon the Hat Posted 21 June 2016 Share Posted 21 June 2016 He is at his peak in the next couple of years, English, just off the back of a fantastic season, and his club don't want OR need to sell him due to the £100M+ TV money, and you have yourself a £30M player. This will look normal come the end of the summer. Look at it the other way, if Lukaku is £75M, or Pogba £100M, is Deeney £30M? Probably.

Screen Shot 2016-06-21 at 11.10.11.png This table is inaccurate. It's counting "winning penalties" as assists, but Vardy took most of the 6 he won, and Deeney took most of the ones he won too I assume. edit: I guess he did have 13 goals and 7 assists... so he did only win 1 penalty, but he scored 6 penalties. How confident are we that they will fit in to our style of play or meet the demands of Premier League. As great as our scouting network is, they have only gone as far as sourcing players from continental Europe. We don't yet have reliable scouts based in South America or the corners of Africa to find the next Vardy. £30m is silly money but as the previous poster said, this is the £15m of last season. Watford don't need the money, they won't sell for anything less, if we want a proven PL striker then I am afraid we have to pay up... Moreover this should send a message out that we are serious about retaining our title and we will give the CL a good go...

Out team was nowhere near as good then and as it is now and we clearly can afford it now and then we were in nothing like the financial position we find ourselves in today. We were rich before we won the league.!!! What do you want to do stay where we with no ambition and wait for the next title to come in another 100+ years or really go for it and be up there every years with the big boy's competing for trophies? Stick or twist???
jayfox26 Posted 21 June 2016 Share Posted 21 June 2016 Not saying he would join us, but if we could get Lukaku for £40-45m would that not be a better option? Vardy and Lukaku would be a ridiculous partnership.

Both are too similar to play in the same team but I'd rather find the extra £20m and pay £50m for a 22 year old Lukaku than £30m for 28 year old Deeney.
