Nice pubs in Leicester

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been to Elbow room in Hinckley? Not a ''pub'' but full of real Ale boffins and if you're into that kind of thing it's very popular. Its sandwiched into the Crescent which means you can nip to poundland and superdrug beforehand, depressing.

I like it, they normally have decent lagers on (rotation), it's busy and skews young-ish.

Per capita it's worse than almost all of those.

Pub drinkers are overwhelmingly white British and Leicester's is 33% WB, plus the university drinking scene is pretty dead in town.

yeh fair. I imagine Stoke and Bradford perform similar. London obv has great pubs, but per capita does it perform as strongly? For me York is number one based on this metric.

London is such an outlier you'd have to do it by Borough level I think. I'd back York on that.

The actual number has Portsmouth as the highest (not best), https://www.beerguild.co.uk/news/revealed-britains-pub-capitals-takes-top-spot/

Unsurprisingly coastal cities seem to do well.

went MK for a saturday night out not long ago and agree, the pub choice was shocking, mainly due to having no town centre per say

Stoke has some decent pubs in my experience - largely due to the Staffordshire breweries such as Joules & Titanic.

I am reliably informed Bradford isn't bad.

In terms of smaller setttlements. Halifax is a town what punches above its weight. Worcester I enjoy. Lichfield is great for somewhere so small.

Bath's dog shite IMO. When it comes to affluent locations.

I guess when you break it down like that, I shouldn't be so harsh on what Leicester has to offer.

Is Leicester the worst city in the UK of its size for pubs?

In there with Coventry and Southampton

Southampton is genuinely the dullest place I've ever been to. It's not a shithole or anything, it's just so relentlessly ****ing bland. Milton Keynes-on-Sea

And people from the county don’t really come in to town

Leicester Uni is really small for a city uni and most DMU students seem to go back to London and Birmingham every weekend

Also Leicester doesn't really benefit from tourism or hen/stags

Doesn't help that if you come into town on the train you have a horrible walk from the station, past that tower block with the spice heads and bag heads sat outside and then the top end of Granby which is equally as bad. Don't bother my as I'm 16st with a shaved head but it doesn't look the most inviting

The best crawl is starting from the castle,  Rutland and Derby,  two tailed lion and finally the Blue Boar.

Ale Wagon I would argue is unique and Real Ale Classroom is a moderately good addition to the city.

We do okay for pubs but my biggest issue is the number of drinkers we have. I do my best to up the numbers.

Plus throw in poor transport links to the wider county.

Yeah this is also important. Wigston is the only suburb with a station and even that isn't located optimally.

There's no way somebody from say Coalville could go into town midweek for a beer without driving or getting a £40 taxi. A bus takes the test part of an hour
