  1. 1. Who do you think will lift the trophy in Russia?

Brazil are going to have to be a lot better than they were 4 years ago. They were a borderline pub side. I'd go as far as to say they shamed the sport and it was a tragedy that they and not the hugely entertaining Colombia or Chile were in that semi-final. If the referees hadn't been totally corrupt in their favour Brazil wouldn't have progressed from the group let alone from those 2 matches.

For that reason you can't rule Russia out. They're no strangers to controversy in sport or otherwise and in a tournament where the hosts are never squeaky clean I can't see them going home early.

The best team does usually win in the end (though that was blatantly not the case at the Euros) so I'll go with Germany but nothing surprises you when FIFA are involved.

Forget Argentina, one man cannot win you the World Cup in this day and age with a lot of containing, defensive football. Teams mark Messi out of the game and then we realise that the rest of them aren't really up to much.

France and Belgium are poorly managed and the better organised teams know how to stop Spain these days, so I'm luke warm on those 3.

You obviously haven't watched Brazil if you don't think they are much better than 4 years ago. They are significantly better than they were 4 years ago and have brought back their classic style of play and added better defensive quality. I would go out and say that they are better than the Germans.

I also think a lot of Europeans overrate the Germans because of their World Cup win and the Confed Cup win. You are talking about a team that almost lost to Ghana and Algeria last World Cup. They aren't infallible.

Spain or Germany for me too. I don't think Brazil have the bottle they used to have, France and Belgium have great players but aren't the best teams together.

I'd love to see Argentina win it for Messi, but besides the attackers, the rest of the side just aren't up to it. It's ridiculous that Icardi is still hounded out of the national team for past demeanours, he'd be starting over Higuian and Aguero for me.

I'd fancy Argentina to finally win another World Cup after so many years. But I wonder how much they can afford to focus their game on Messi. Then again, it's probably his last chance of winning the trophy, can't see him being around in four years' time.

Other than that, Spain, France or even England for me.

Anything but Germany or Brazil, they've already won it enough times. :D

I think Brazil probably have the most complete squad....excellent goalkeeping and defending options, excellent creative options backed up by the typically gritty, un-brazillian like workmen of Casemiro and Paulinho, and of course, the Neymar factor.

Dark horses im going to suggest the Portuguese. Ronaldo has hit top form and Andre Silva was excellent in qualifying. They've improved a lot from the euros in the games I watched them in qualifying and I think theyre a side that could surprise a few.

It's impossible to rule Portugal out simply because of Ronaldo

I'm going for an outsider this year, it's about time really.

I read somewhere a while back that statistically and given the development in the continent, an African nation will have won it by 2022 (inclusive). I think Nigeria will have one hell of a side by then, perhaps it's too early for them to cause a shock this time.

Belgium I have put money on in every tournament since 2010... but they always seem to falter, i'd fancy them but surely bobby martinez can't win a world cup?!?! lol

If you look at nations that have won the Euro's through one players influence (Portugal and Greece) could that factor mean Egypt or Argentina could win this World Cup? :P

And then of course there's England.... lol.... I mean we all laugh but ultimately we appear to have learned how to defend and grab an ugly win.... might be something in that ;)

Lastly wouldn't be surprised to see Croatia and Columbia in the QF/SF

If a favourite was to win it though, surely it's about time that utterly ridiculous France squad delivered the goods lol

I wonder if ultimately it'll be down to who handles the pressure of Russia as a location best.

Spain - they appear to have the most cohesion as an 11. Their recent demolition of Argentina showed that. Sampaloli and this current Argentina squad just isn't a fit.

I have got my eye on some betting markets which often provide value. I won well last time on Algeria being the Best African team. I'm interested to see the odds on Egypt and Uruguay qualifying from Group A. As I am England to the Quarters.

Won't happen in my lifetime.
