At Brighton some knobheads behind me were chatting shite all game. One was asking about why Maddison was sent off and said he didn't know that diving was now a red card offence. It became like a nervous tick and evolved from a frustrated grumble in 1991 to - round about the time of our relegation in 1995 - standing up and bellowing it, red-faced and full of ale, at quite random intervals. Often at Neil Lewis. I'm not kidding, it was every game for about half of my youth. And I wasn't the only one who noticed it either. I only ever spoke to him once, when he was eating a pie in the concourse, and he was surprisingly charming. He liked Pink Floyd, if I remember correctly. Every word you can think of - mostly about our players and the ref, got to the point that I don't want to go anymore or I'm likely to take his head off.
