Xavi made one quote in about 2010-ish about ManUtd being his favourite English side and Scholes being his favourite player growing up and almost overnight people retrospectively elevated Scholes to twice the player he actually was and to one of the greatest midfielders ever.

Not sure what this is doing in the Vardy thread but it crops up every so often.

 

It wasn't just Xavi who said Scholes was his favorite player, there's about 50 other legends of the game who've said the same (and most during the time he was playing, not retrospectively)

 

Fans may think he's overrated but it's those actually in the game that I listen to. Here's all the quotes if you've got 5 minutes to bask in his glory...

And every time these quotes come up it’s a fallacy too. Players don’t watch football anymore than fans for the most part. They also don’t tend to badmouth other players, especially retired ones. You can often find these kind of quotes for every player - certainly for Gerrard and Lampard you will.

 

Many players who play also admit they don’t watch other games. Hence why de Bruyne won PFA POTY in probably his poorest ever season last season where he missed half of it through injury - because he’s the best player talent wise and players don’t really watch many games.

 

Remember those few months leading up to the 2010 World Cup as well when every pundit and ex-pro bizarrely collectively decided Joe Cole was the best of the lot and the most technically gifted player England had ever produced? You can find loads of quotes from around that time from great players and pundits genuinely calling Joe Cole better than Messi and the most talented player in the world.

 

Similarly:

 

“I cannot think of a better goalkeeper in the world than Joe Hart” - Gigi Buffon

 

”For years I thought Buffon was the best, but now Joe Hart is my favourite. It’s hard to think of a better keeper. Cassilas has amazing reflexes, but has trouble with crosses and the ball at his feet. Joe can do all these things” - David James

 

“Have to say Joe Hart has been incredible, for me, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world” - Wayne Rooney

That was from a 2 minute google of a random good player. Find anyone with 6 decent months at the top level and you’ll find loads of those glowing quotes.

 

If someone grows up supporting ManUtd they love Paul Scholes, he’s one of their greatest ever players, more so than Keane and Beckham for example, despite the fact Keane and Beckham were the better players, which was widely agreed on at the time, because of Scholes' longevity and partially the way Keane and Beckham left the club too. Also helped his legacy that Giggs turned out to be a total willy puller who the club and fans have understandably tried to distance themselves from. It’s understandable when they have such longevity for one club. Same reason Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton will go down as greater Leicester players than Ngolo  Kante. Of course Morgan and Albrighton are very good players anyway, but their longevity gives them extra standing, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

 

Many quotes like this are just throwaway lines and often poorly translated into English when they’re about to play a club in their local newspaper or matchday programme, what they remember about that club. Media training gets them to overly praise the club and old players, it’s how it works.

This is what I mean about revisionism and applying modern standards though. Scholes absolutely did not “run the midfield” for ManUtd. That’s applying modern tactics to the game of 20 years ago. ManUtd were never a possession based side, they weren’t a side who beat opposition by dominating and running the midfield, they were a side who got it wide quickly and dominated the game in the wide areas. Again, absolutely no one even ManUtd fans at the time thought Scholes was their best or most important player or on the same level as Gerrard or Lampard. It was all done out at the end of Scholes’ career, largely due to his longevity.

Anyway, to try and bring the thread back to Vardy. Just depresses me how much we miss him. Just saw our points per game with Vardy, Iheanacho and Daka (I've included Schmiechel as he's played every minute in the PL, so is the same as the season average overall)

That works out at about 15 extra points over the season having Vardy in the side compared to having Iheanacho and Daka in the side. We desperately miss him right now. :(

Think some time people forget we are missing one of the best strikers in the PL era.

Just to play devil's advocate, IIRC, some of the quotes from the Barcelona players weren't just about them saying they like Scholes but weren't there also comments that the coaches at La Masia even used to actually show them footage of him as an example of good midfield play? 

 

They valued his ball retention and his close control, thought he had qualities that would have made him a success there. It was about more than just whether he was a good or bad player.
