Eleven Leicester City old boys who are still playing in 2023
We've picked out 11 players from City's past who made their debuts for the club a decade ago, but who are still plying their trade around the country or around Europe

While Leicester City feel like an established Premier League side these days, less than a decade ago they were a Championship outfit hoping to end a long spell outside of the top flight.

As such, they went through a host of players from their Premier League relegation in 2004 to their promotion in 2014 when they were searching for the right squad to get them to the promised land.

Many of those that played for them in the Championship now represent rival clubs in the Premier League, such as Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard, Ben Mee, Michael Keane, Chris Wood, and Jeff Schlupp. There’s a host of players too who stayed with them for a number of years before moving on more recently, like Kasper Schmeichel, Andy King, and Matty James.

A good number of the players City have had successful careers in the EFL and are still going strong today, like Michael Morrison, Joe Mattock, Richard Stearman, Curtis Davies, and Kyle Naughton. But, here we’re looking at players who may have fallen off fans’ radars to catch up with their careers. All of the following players made their debuts for City 10 years ago, in 2013, or earlier.

Max Gradel

Once the club’s next big thing, it never quite worked out for Gradel at City, despite his dazzling footwork exciting supporters upon his arrival into the first team. He still had a very good career in England though, with Leeds, and then with Bournemouth after a switch from France.

Now 35, Gradel is not only still playing, but is still doing extremely well. He is at Sivasspor in Turkey, where he has 17 goals and assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, including five in the Europa Conference League to help his club into the last 16 of the tournament.

Jonny Hayes

Irish winger Hayes spent a couple of years at City after arriving from Reading in 2007, but he never established himself in the team and moved to Scotland thereafter. North of the border, he has carved out a very good career, and won a few Premiership titles at Celtic, including couple under Brendan Rodgers.

Now 35, he’s back with Aberdeen. He’s got an impressive 12 assists in 24 appearances in all competitions this season.

Gabor Bori

One half of a famed Hungarian double act along with Zsolt Laczko, Gabor Bori, perhaps the least exciting of the two, is still playing part-time football at the age of 39. He only stepped back from the full-time game last month, leaving Hungarian third division side Bicskei and moving just across the border to join Austrian outfit Pilgersdorf.

He reflected on his time in England last month, telling Hungarian media: “I played only 11 games there, including the reserve team. It was a completely different environment.

“I was amazed, the training centre at Leicester, I can safely say it was world-class. Even at the time when I played there, they had eight grass pitches, an indoor hall with artificial grass, serious medical equipment, and we were only talking about 2008. It could not even be compared with the Hungarian conditions at that time. I was loaned from MTK, and then for some reason the two clubs could not agree on the final sale.”

Miguel Vitor

One of many loanees at City under Sven Goran Eriksson, Portuguese defender Vitor had an eventful time at the club, with goals, red cards, and injuries. But while he never made it with parent club Benfica, he has had a successful career.

For the past six-and-a-half years, he has been with Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva, for whom he has won titles and played in Europe. They just missed out on a place in the Europa Conference League knockout stages this season. Also, he has become a naturalised citizen, and so is now a full Israeli international.

Jay Spearing

A short-term loanee from Liverpool in 2010, midfielder Spearing is now back at the club where he started his career. He is, in what is not-too-uncommon practice by Premier League clubs, an over-age player for the Reds’ Under-21s.

So, in between coaching the Under-18s, he will occasionally turn out for the Under-21s to add a bit more experience to the side. He made his second debut for the club in the EFL Trophy in a defeat to Rochdale last September.

Jeffrey Bruma

Another Eriksson loanee, Bruma returned to his native Netherlands last month to join Heerenveen from Kasimpasa. The centre-back has been at a host of big names since leaving Chelsea permanently, including PSV, Wolfsburg, and Schalke, and he was able to earn more than 20 caps for his country.

Now 31, he’s back in his homeland. In his first 90 minutes upon his return, he helped Heerenveen into the last eight of the Dutch Cup.

Ritchie De Laet

A City title-winner and fan favourite, he continued to win trophies upon his return to his very first club Royal Antwerp, lifting the Belgian Cup in 2020. He’s gunning for more too, with Antwerp third in the table, and having just beaten league leaders Genk.

De Laet is in no way taking a back seat either. He’s played in all but one of their league fixtures this season. But in perhaps a sign that age is catching up with him and he can no longer keep up with tricky wingers, he has the most yellow cards in the division.

Marko Futacs

While he didn’t show it at City, big Hungarian striker Futacs knows how to find the net. He’s been around Europe since leaving City, to Turkey, Croatia, and Slovenia, but is now back in Hungary with second-division team MTK Budapest, Bori’s old club. He was banging in the goals as part of a promotion push earlier this season, with 11 in 12 outings, but has been out injured since October.

Ignasi Miquel

The Spanish defender, who played 12 games at City on loan from Arsenal and scored in a cup upset win over Fulham, has been all over the place back in his home country. After re-establishing his career with smaller clubs Ponferradina and Lugo, he’s since represented Malaga, Getafe, Girona, Leganes, and Huesca, never playing more than 35 games for any single club. He’s now with Granada in La Liga2, and has just enjoyed a run of four wins and four clean sheets to kickstart a promotion push.

Martyn Waghorn and Anthony Knockaert

City supporters won’t have lost track of two fan favourites in Waghorn and Knockaert, who have been plying their trade in the Premier League and Championship since leaving the King Power, but they’re included on the list after joining forces. The pair are now numbers 49 and 50 at Huddersfield who they joined on loan last month, Waghorn from Coventry and Knockaert from Fulham.

Their task is to help the Terriers avoid relegation to League One, starting by ending a seven-match winless streak. Ten years ago last month, both Knockaert and Waghorn scored in a 6-1 win over City over Huddersfield.

Here's a litte puzzle.

Below you can see the Football League results from October 24th 1970, from all four divisions.

We got an impressive 3-0 win at Hillsborough, with Ally Brown and David Nish (2) on the scoresheet.

But from all the other goalscorers mentioned, can you spot:

a)  Six who played for Leicester.

b)  One who managed Leicester.

c) Two who were born in Leicester (both quite famous names in the 1970s).

d) One who played cricket for Leicestershire.

e) One who signed for Leicester and even trained at Belvoir Drive before a failed medical  scuppered the deal.

Thanks to Mickyhoss at Bentley's Roof for spotting one I hadn't - there's six who played for us so I've edited it.

Scott Taylor

Tommy Wright

Colin Hill

Wayne Brown

Gareth Williams

Wes Morgan

Geoff Horsfield

Mike Stowell

Jonny Evans

Mark Draper

Callum Davidson

Albrighton (for Hartlepool)

Liam Moore

Junior Lewis.

You lot missed loads ;)

Love them "where are they now!!!!!" mercury articles that are essentially just someone scribbling what they've found on Wikipedia

They must be interns who do most of the Mercury/ThisIsLeicestershire articles, as most of the reporting etc. is quite poor quality now..

he was. He was the tradition ‘lump’ at the back who could head and tackle well. Also made up with not being the fastest with his awareness and timing. . I liked him.

And set up Walshies famous equaliser in the 3-3 home draw to Arsenal, the game where Bergkamp scored his hat trick

Any excuse or no excuse to post one of my all time favourite goals.

That game, although only a draw was one of my all time favourites, the Bergkamp hat trick was amazing but we fought and battled all game and it felt like a win at the end.

Mine too. I was living in London at the time, and a mate of mine suggested we go - he was driving. It was a real last-minute decision that involved me leaving work an hour early and getting to bed about one o'clock the following morning, but totally worth it. We were in the Double Decker, above where Walshy leapt in for his header for 3-3, and then ran off to shake hi fist at Ian Wright, who had been subbed off a few minutes earlier. Loved every minute!

This from today's Guardian:

"In the case of Phoenix Community Capital, investors bought tokens of a cryptocurrency called fire and 10 tokens earned investors a “nest”.

Each nest offered a return of 0.225 fire tokens a day – meaning they would get their original investment back in 45 days and keep accumulating more. Fire tokens were highly valued earlier in 2022 but by the summer had become almost worthless – and in any case, investors can no longer access their accounts to sell off the tokens.

Under the structure of the project, the company used seven out of every 10 fire tokens from each nest to pay rewards to other investors and two in 10 to invest in new crypto projects, while one in 10 went into a “liquidity pool”. It insisted this approach was sustainable but the investment projects did not appear to have produced returns when the company’s website went offline.

One investor, Alan Rogers, a former Premier League footballer, said he had lost an investment of around $50,000 and he believed the founders were no longer involved."
