Asked if it was a difficult half for Justin, Southgate replied: "Yes, it was. I think a couple of passes went astray, and he got caught defensively early on, and that’s a big test in those moments.

"He also was feeling something a little bit in his calf, which hopefully is OK, but I felt we wanted to put Bukayo on at that stage anyway, to give ourselves a little bit more of an attacking thrust.

"Look, it’s not easy to come in after three, four days and go straight into the team. Normally we would do that process slightly differently.

"You’d start on the bench, you’d have a bit longer with us, and we would blood people in. We felt we wanted to do that (start him)."

"I felt we wanted to put Bukayo on at that stage anyway, to give ourselves a little bit more of an attacking thrust." Well that worked out well didn't it Gareth.

Probably not getting picked again is he?

We know that he’s nowhere near his best since his return.

I suspect Southgate knows this too but he wanted to get him involved in the squad because if Shaw doesn’t get back his form then JJ/Mitchell are behind chilly. and no one knows if chilly is going to just return to form.  He brought  Mitchell into the last squad.  He’s handling his left back situation with some intelligence (as opposed to his creative attacking midfield)

if JJ gets his top form back in the autumn then he has every chance of making the squad. If he doesn’t then they won’t take a JJ with his current performance levels.

It's no good being an England "prospect" then giving an average performance when given a chance.

All the players were shit but Southgate gave an honest opinion when asked a direct question.

I would have preferred him to add that every player was poor, most of them with far more international experience than Justin plus none of them had been out injured for so long.

But how many balls were passed to him? 4, that's how many. 2 driven overhead into the corner with one of those over hit. 1 that he hit out of play. Then 2 that were decent interplay exchanges in and around the box particularly with Kane. The other of those resulted in a dangerous set peace for a foul.

I think if players were instructed to pass to him they would. When he did get the ball he would generally look to release as soon as.

I do think players may have been instructed to hit a long pass for him to run onto but like you said, that was twice and one was overhit.

He was poor but so was everyone

So the comments in here about Gareth slating him clearly aren’t true IF this is everything that was said.

I think the above is pretty fair from Southgate. Saka was miles better when he came on (to be expected anyway given the entire context)

Injury clearly didn’t help JJ but let’s be honest he’s been bang out of form since returning anyway, hopefully can get a proper look in when he’s back to himself.

Dennis rofe was quality too and steve kember not bad. Later ian Wilson and steve lynex had similar qualities. Always have their all and took it to the opposition.

Dennis Rofe was sheer class, but I always thought Steve Kember never quite cut it for us.

In a selfish kinda way I wouldn’t be bothered. Prefer him to keep fit for us. Same for Maddison and Barnes. I would rather see them flourish here than being bit part players whenever Southgate feels like playing them.

JJ maybe looked a little shaky early on but grew into it before picking up the injury, won us a nice free-kick in a dangerous position from an exploritive run, linking up with Kane and breaking on Hungary.

He played half a match, debutising, 15minutes of it carrying an injury while covering Harry Maguire. Harsh to be too critical. It says something he's even broke in and got a game, hopefully it's not like Madders where its just the one and into the bin with a media campaign against him ... oh no, he's in a casino after being removed from the squad! Must be an awful character, let's put all our faith into golden boy Mason Mount :frusty:

Ridiculous ..  JJ should not have been playing ...  he's got nowhere near the form we know he is capable of.   Maddison on the other hand should have been playing.  Pick form players ffs !! Southgate is a mediocre moron and should be booted out asap.   I know some people will say hang on he got us to this and he got us to that but with the players he had available that was fairly straightforward ...  however, if his selection and tactics had been better we should have won those events.   I'm sorry ...   i really think he is clueless and a championship manager at best.   :(

We may have to confront the fact he will be made of biccies for the rest of his career now sadly.

Could say the same about a couple of our fullbacks unfortunately :(. I wonder if this is why we’ve been linked to Calvin Ramsay (RB) & Yilmaz (LB) in recent windows.

Southgate vs Hungary: "Justin missed a couple of passes early on" (won't play again anytime soon)

Southgate vs Italy: "everyone missed many passes today but I have faith in my players"
