A long shot, but does anyone have any photos of Thorpe Astley before/during construction? Vaguely remember it being built when I was a kid, but never really saw what it was like.

You could try asking these on Facebook

Mercury 1956 - Try doing those trips by train these days.

As a kid, I used to love having to get up early to get to the rail/bus station in time for a trip to the seaside. Having to get a taxi to the station which for us, was a real treat.

My dad used to take us on a Midland Red bus mystery tour in the 60's. Loved it.

May be an image of road

Belgrave Road, Leicester, April 1966, after a slight argument between the lorry and the sausage van. 🙂
Second pic is the best equivalent I can get from Google, as seen in 2020.

Not a lot of change other than the road layout and painted houses which I'm not a fan of especially as it was part funded by the council so I doubt they'll cough up anymore £££s when it all starts to deteriorate.

People, myself included, decry the loss of scenes like these but, when you think about it, even though people are saddened by the loss of the landmarks of our town centre, over time, others would have replaced them maybe for better or for worse and our local population then would have done much of what we do here and decry the new developments. Lewis's for example, hardly a noteworthy historical building when it was built but people bemoan it's loss because it was unique. There's not much that is unique in our city these days.

It's only when you see what we had that we miss them now. Good and bad. And I guess that will be the same for future generations.

The "Pally" a few moons ago and below is what used to be there. It was known as "Batten`s Corner" and Batten`s demolished their building and built the dance hall most of us affectionately knew as "The Pally"....Palais de Danse.

The old hoss trough/drinking fountain that used to be sited opposite Vestry St a few moons ago...Its visible in the "Pally/Battens Corner" pic on the far right....

Work to begin on £900k pedestrianisation of key city centre street
The project is expected to take seven months to complete

Work is set to begin on the pedestrianisation of one of Leicester's busiest streets in an attempt to create a "welcoming" gateway to the city centre for people arriving at the nearby railway station.

Leicester City Council is spending almost £1 million on the Granby Street revamp - concentrating on the stretch between the junctions of Northampton Street and the inner ring road at St George’s Way.

The aim is help make the busy route safer and more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists with automated bollards at entry and exit points, a more level surface and changes to the existing cycle lane.

The work is expected to take seven months to complete and is being paid for through the Getting Building Fund - a Government fund which was created to help towns and cities create jobs and support economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deputy city mayor Councillor Adam Clarke, who leads on environment and transportation, said: “This part of Granby Street is a major gateway into the city centre for people arriving in Leicester by train and is a busy shopping street in its own right.

Huge high rise development in pipeline would straddle river in Leicester city centreleicestermercury
"It links directly to the super crossing on St George’s Way and is an important route for anyone walking or cycling into the city centre.

“These improvements will make the route more welcoming and safer for pedestrians and cyclists, while having minimal impact on motorists.

"It’s over a decade since the underpass that ran beneath the ring road was removed and now is a good time to revisit the area and improve it further.”

What will the £900,000 revamp entail?

Automated bollards will be installed at the entry and exit points

Changes will be made to the existing contraflow cycle lane between Dover Street and the inner ring road

Improvements are also planned for Northampton Street, where the existing footpaths will be widened, and a new loading bay created

New tree planting and cycle parking are also planned, and the area could see the introduction of a new docking station as part of the city’s new e-bike share scheme.

Kevin Harris, chair of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) board of directors, said: “Granby Street is an important gateway to Leicester city centre and often the first port of call for visitors to our city.

"These improvements will help prioritise visitors that make the journey via public transport and help us meet our ambitious targets for sustainable transport and carbon reduction.

“These improvements to Leicester’s public realm will result in a better quality of life for Leicester’s residents, increased economic opportunity for local businesses and better links to the St George’s and Cultural Quarter areas, which are vibrant parts of the city centre and key to the local economy.”

An earlier proposal that said Dover Street's junction with Granby Street would be closed is due to be amended following feedback from consultation carried out in spring 2021.

A partial road closure of Northampton Street, from Charles Street to Newport Place, will be required from Sunday 16 January for up to 11 weeks.

Work will then move further along Northampton Street, from its junctions with Newport Place to Granby Street. Well-signed diversions will be in place. Work will move onto Granby Street from spring 2022.
