May be an image of 8 people and bridge

Braunstone Gate building the Bowstring Bridge around 1897.

Demolishing it was criminal by the council and DMU.

It was a particularly rare bowstring bridge that the council didn't want to maintain.

This.

And DMU/LCC almost dismissing the work and effort put into building it by those guys in the picture. As if it meant nothing.

Sadly LCC needs the DMU money and will bow to they're every demand. DMU don't give a shit about our city's historical landmarks if they stand in their way. They are a passionless business.

With the interesting abutments currently unused, I always thought that building bars shops and restaurants up there would have made a unique outdoor space.

The 1960s destroyed Leicester, we really should have learned our lesson by now.

Interesting idea. Maybe DMU could fund such a development for the benefit of their students as well as the wider population.

I doubt it, though.

The DMU is not academically attractive to potential students so that have to appeal via their socialising facilities.

So, there are so many students coming to DMU and so much DMU student accommodation in all levels of properties and the new builds to accommodate these students because they can come here and have a good time? What a waste of their parent's money.

I don't disagree though. DMU doesn't have a great reputation as an academic establishment and IMO, DMU is all about a business model rather than providing credible academia.

Its doing very well on its more vocational subjects. Its development strategies aside, it's an institution we should be proud of in the city.

It complements the more traditional Leicester university very well.

Braunie gate has had its day. Use love drinking down there, it's a dump now.

May be an image of outdoors

A wonderful aerial view of the Highfields area in 1968, taken from the spire of St. Peter's Church.

The church was originally built between between 1872 and 1879, designed by the nationally renowned architect George Edmund Street. Unfortunately the church suffered bomb damage in 1940 and the building began to decline, with the spire being taken down this same year in 1968.

May be an image of outdoors and text that says "Leicester Storyofleicester.info cester.info"

A 19th century illustration of the Vulcan Works, on Vulcan Road.
Image from the Leicester & Leicestershire Record Office.

The Vulcan Works was built for brothers Josiah and Benjamin Gimson's engineering business, between 1876 and 1879. It was one of the earliest in Britain to combine an iron foundry with an engineering works. Designed by John Breedon Everard, it is three storeys high and 268 feet long. The foundry was on the left, facing the railway line, with a 120 foot-high chimney at the back.

As well as smaller machinery, the factory built large steam engines. In 1889-91 they built the four beam engines for Abbey Pumping Station, complete with eight boilers and associated machinery. It was this engine that enabled a proper network of sewers to be established in Leicester and in turn enabled the widespread introduction of flush toilets.

If you fancy seeing the magnificent Gimson Beam Engines in action, you can book a fully guided tour at Abbey Pumping Station this Saturday:

The station certainly looks smarter when driving past it.

Need to spruce up the streets around and including Belvior Street next, as they seem 'forgotten' parts of the city centre.

That area of the city should be a prime spot for decent redevelopment, I’d love an outdoor/indoor industrial street food type place like they have in Liverpool, Sheffield and Nottingham.
