Story of Leicester

Anyone remember the Pineapple pub near Burleys Flyover?
Photo dated c1970.
Licenced as a pub from 1838, it became one of Leicester's main gay bars in the 1990s, but was eventually closed and boarded up in 2004

Every male teacher at my school was seen leaving this pub by someone. None of us really knew why that was funny.

When for a job BUSM following recommendation from the school employment advisor but walked out half way through hated the look of the place. and the work.

Worst advisor I ever met.  As a 16yr old I wanted to have a career in high level carpentry but was persuaded it was a dying trade. Deeply regret not following my dream. Did get a good job as an apprentice somewhere else and did ok though.

Back when it wasn't frowned upon to have a few in the pub at lunchtime & then go back to work to operate dangerous machinery while dozing off, the pineapple was the haunt of many a 'Corah girl' who could certainly put some away on their break.

LEICESTER: Broughton's of Churchgate, pictured here in the 1980's.
History of Broughtons
The Great Grandfather of Mr Roger Broughton teamed up with a Mr Jones and formed Broughton & Jones. This opened in 1888 at a large city centre premises in The Market Place, Leicester. In 1979, at a very young age of 32, Mr Roger Broughton then opened his own ironmongery specialist business at a corner property in Churchgate.

Had to check, but it’s still going

Was a great resource when renovating a place on Lorne Road back in the day

Story of Leicester
An aerial view of Leicester from the north-west, 1935.
Photo credit: Britain from Above / Historic England.
At the bottom right of the picture is the former British Thomas Houston factory site.
From 1939, mainly women workers started manufacturing radio location and radar equipment here for the war effort. In 1943, the factory played a small but key role in the German 'Dambusters' raid. Lancaster bombers flew at very low levels dropping bombs which would bounce across the water and destroy German dams, flooding large areas. The BTH factory manufactured the powerful generators needed for the planes' strong spotlights to judge the exact heights needed to carry out the operation.
A new heritage panel about this site's manufacturing past can be found at the corner of Blackbird Road and Anstey Lane.

City players in the 70' could often be seen in Granny's on a Saturday. A more intimate club than the clubs/disco's in town. Had a Club downstairs for the under 18s, Aunties.

I was DJ at Granny's between 1977 and 1979. It was a great place in its time. There was also an upstairs bar above the disco which a little more private and quieter.

During my time there I met Weller, Shilton, Stringfellow, Nish and the Birch.

It's a beautiful place, for sure, but it's a shame that it often gets overcrowded.

Were you the one who was complaining that there were other people there when you went for a walk during lockdown?

Apologies if it wasn't you, just remember it made me chuckle.

More of them should F off to allow the likes of us to wander around in relative isolation.

And don't get me started on the queue for the waffle hut.
