Trump voting .... only once and that turned out to be a mistake that I freely admit. At least we didnt start any new wars, that I know about, and we started pulling our proxies and troops out of the Middle East and Afghanistan. Clinton surely would have doubled down again and started more wars no doubt. The Ruling Class and its Masters must be fed no matter what the cost. And money is what war is about in the US IMO. This sums up my feelings of why I voted for Trump the first time https://www.resilience.org/stories/2016-01-21/donald-trump-and-the-politics-of-resentment/

Really don't know what right or left really stand for anymore. 30 yrs ago I did but now they seem to just describe one extreme or the other. I care about all people.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/communism.asp

I consider myself open to some parts of communism/ socialism or other systems of government that might work better for all of us and the planet. Whatever we have now isn't close to working.

Conspiracy Theory.....One mans truth is another mans Conspiracy Theory. All depends on where you get your info. And sometimes my instincts are better than the NY Times and the WMD lies that Judith Miller wrote about to get us into Iraq. I am however intently interested in UFO's and people who have experienced their visitation. Thats something the NYTimes can back me up on (UFO's not experiencers). JFK?. Had to throw that on.

Libertarian? Really? "I am my brothers keeper" Thats what I believe at least although its hard to watch what goes on in the world. If only I could keep my head in the sand :)

Septic El Empty? I guess that's where we're at as a society. Speaking past each other calling people names. Unwilling to do the hard work necessary to search for an understanding of a problem. For myself its trying to see the world through their eyes.

Just wanted to give a better picture for anyone who wanted to throw some more names and one liners.

Still a Brendan Rodgers fan as well.:scarf:

Septic = septic tank = yank = American. El empty = a fondly remembered poster from years gone by who was prolific in his conspiracies, I don't believe much offense is intended.

Fair play too you for sticking yr neck out

Its important to me to try to understand both sides of an issue. Thats probably why I made a point to listen to the Oliver Stone / Vladimir Putin interviews. A start at learning the story behind the incessent propaganda I was fed in the 90's when the USSR dissolved. Really opened my eyes to just how deep this issue goes in terms of geography and the history of how borders get drawn. Centuries not decades.

Also starting to go down the Rabbit Hole with John and Oswald Spengler. How deep it goes :D

Yeah I'm really undecided on it. On one hand, I'm glad smoking levels have drastically reduced over here the past generation or so. It's definitely so much better going into restaurants and pubs without the stench of smoke everywhere and even walking down the street less people smoking in your face. But hopefully banning it outright doesn't cause some nasty black markets or anything to spring up. Although I guess they just ask people who were born before them to buy  some for them if they really want to smoke?

It's definitely an interesting experiment to see how it goes.

This is a huge decision by NZ.  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/09/new-zealand-to-ban-smoking-for-next-generation-in-bid-to-outlaw-habit-by-2025

My fear is that prohibition has never worked... but its going to be an interesting watch :)

That's mental. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

I can't see this ending well tbh, just going to create a new black market which I imagine will be fairly easy to set up given tobacco's global reach, even in such a remote island nation.

Blimey, that's really rather authoritarian, especially as other liberal democracies seem to be traveling in the opposite direction regarding the smoking of drugs. And with the number of people actually smoking dropping like a stone anyway.

This was on Radio 4 this morning and the issue of illicit black market 'baccy in particular was raised. As the article mentions, the problem is particularly acute in the Maori/Polynesian sections of society.

I lived in Auckland for a time as a youngster - and the smokers at school were the Maori kids that had been resettled from a particularly impoverished and deprived southern area of the city called Manukau. They'd also tend to beat the crap out of you on the Rugby pitch and fill you in and nick your lunch money for shits and giggles. One of the school bullies was called Mariana Te Pa - I called her Mariana Teapot once and she set fire to my satchel and threw it on the sports hall roof.

I can believe that. I was in Napier about 20 years ago when I witnessed a group of about 5 Maori lads breaking into our hostel, they saw me and stalked me like an animal right across town. I had to go and hide in the toilets at the bus station until they were gone!

lol

Unusual there, but because it's such a tourist destination they are there to be preyed upon. I think around a quarter of the population is of Maori descent and although not as deprived as parts of Auckland, they can struggle for work and are similarly marginalised. Pretty safe there, but a hostel is always a target. I'd be more concerned about memories of the Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Not sure why they’re making a big deal about needing to be 14+ to buy cigarettes. I thought it was 16 or 18 in most countries?

No, I thought they meant that no one who is currently 14 or younger will EVER be legally able to buy tobacco.... even when they are of age.

I think any policy which says "you are an adult citizen but have fewer rights than this other adult citizen" is very problematic.

They were always going to make Assange a martyr anyway so this is just going through the motions.

The UK does what the US government tells it to do.

Trump? January 6th? Dosn't matter to me and is just a side show or deception away from the things that matter.......... Don't look at the man behind the curtain who gives away 700 to 800+ billion a year for our defense budget while screaming that we can't afford affordable health care for all. The piranha that is my federal government needs to end. The sooner the better.
