Maddison

So short-sighted imho. The Nations League represents a perfect opportunity to see what players like Madders can do. If either Foden or Mount gets injured for the world cup then he has a problem as he hasn't bothered to integrate anyone else.

I think it's a ****ing insult to say that Mount and Foden are the only guys he needs in that position. Managed to find a place for Jesse ****ing Lingard when he'd made all of 2 appearances for united early this season.

As you can probably tell, I genuinely think this decision is appalling.

Madders has spent virtually the entire season playing either 8 or RW so this crap about position is total bullshit

I'm genuinely gutted for him. It's a joke of a decision. Can only think that Madders has committed the crime of having a personality and occasionally speaking his mind. Perhaps if he were a boring bastard he'd get the call.

Our national team has absolutely no characters in it at all.  Characters are what made Italia 90 so exciting and emotional, Gazza, Gary L. Waddle and Stuart Pearce. Madders sits in this category and can inspire crowds. The lot we had in the last world cup, well, dull as dirty dishwater.

Not my concern* but this is just pathetic from Southgate. After West Ham in April 2021 you could understand and also with how good Grealish was but to exclude him like this after a quite brilliant season is outrageous.

Hodgson for all his faults at least recognised Vardy.

* Well apart from that come on madders! Let's make it happen 🇮🇪.

Good point. Southgate clearly just doesn't like him. Shame he hasn't got the personality to overlook that and pick Madders on his actual ability.

True, although Foden broke lockdown rules and continues to be picked. Kyle Walker broke lockdown rules to **** prostitutes but seemed to be forgiven pretty quickly.

Regardless of who Southgate selects, when it comes the the actual competition he will pick the same shit team that continue to fail .

It is the style of play too. Slow side way ineffective build-up, a bit like Rodgers 1.0.

Walker never upset Southgate.

foden could have crapped in his waistcoat pocket and he’d have to forgive him because he’s that good …..

Maddison has done more this season to get himself into the squad than most already in there when they were first selected.

It is probably better for us if he's not involved and can rest but clearly he wants to play for England and can't do a lot more having been asked to.

Foden is good though. He has that extra bit you want at the end of the pitch. Mount was good but his form has dropped but I can see why Southgate wants to retain him: he can’t just drop players willy nilly. Maddison is different to Foden - he can operate deeper. On current form, I think Maddison offers something different. He is also different to Mount who is more of a bulldozer like Barnes (but better).

So Grealish 6 goals for Man City and Maddison 18 for us. But it doesn’t matter who you play for…... Imagine if that was the other way round goals wise and Maddison had been picked. Absolutely baffling decision.

Grealish hasn’t payed enough because of where he’s gone

If players move to ‘big clubs’ and get dropped because of rotation, then players may think twice about signing for   big clubs - that won’t suit the FA commercial dept who need as many players as possible to be with big clubs …

He's been called up and made his debut since. Also as previously mentioned, there's numerous players in that squad who've messed up, including Foden who did so whilst on international duty.

 Thats true

Who knows if he subsequently learned of something.

Foden will be forgiven pretty much anything because he’s that good

Maddison should do everything he can to switch to Ireland, F.A. won't sack Southgate and Southgate won't pick him

My missus is Irish and some of my relatives. She has already named her car Maddison. I would never here the end of it. ☹️

Mount has had a pretty impressive season himself.

Sadly it appears that it’s not what Madders has done on the pitch for us this season but more that Southgate hasn’t forgotten the “casino gate” perhaps?

Southgate does seem to have a blindspot regarding Maddison even if he did cap him once. Would have been ideal to try him as he offers something different. England  ran out of gas when ahead in major tournaments . Vardy was not used enough and still had a decent record for England. What if Foden or Mount get injured before World Cup. When Ramsey was boss nobody could be sure of their place. Seems Southgate is almost offering a guarantee to the other two and closing his mind

Kane and Grealish are more Irish than Maddison in fact. Grealish, I believe, has represented Ireland.

What impression do you lot get from fans of other teams about what they think of Maddison? My mates a Newcastle fan. Talking to him earlier, he said he's glad he missed out as he think he's a knob. I asked why he thought that, he said he'd done stupid things. When pressed on that he could name anything he'd done.

I think he seems like a very likeable lad. Come across well in interviews, has slight cheeky humorous side to him, plays with a smile on his face, rarely in the papers for doing anything wrong apart from his fashion. Bias aside I think he's one of the most likeable players in the league.

I seen on twitter alot of other teams fans were shocked at the amount of goals and assists he'd got this season .

I bet your mate would love him if he went to Newcastle

I hear similar.

The most I ever get when pushed is some vague internet story about him saying "do you know who I am?" in some nightclub as an 18 year old in Aberdeen, I bet most footballers did something simarly stupid when they were 18, it's hardly that big a deal.

I agree. I think Maddison and Antonio are the 2 best interviewees in the Premier League and come across as the 2 most likeable characters in the division in the press. He's also notoriously really close friends with some of the other players in the England squad.

I don't really get the opinion at all that he's only not in the England squad because he's bad for the dressing room or a knob? I only see the exact opposite, that he's really good friends with lots of the England squad and comes across as one of the most likeable players in the division.
