Maddison

Still can't see Southgate picking him. That would mean dropping one of his favourites. If Maddison does make the squad he probably won't see a single minute of action.

Like all English managers before him, maybe exceptions Venables +Hoddle...

Southgate will turn a blind eye to the most in-form player available to him.

Then after the main event & through neutral periods will select him....

Besides...look who Southgate is actually willing to take.

They are also good calls...

Alot of England fans would like to see

Foden,Grealish,Bellingham and equally disappointed if they were not picked.

Mount seems the one holding the split descion card....

Unlike many,I don't think Southgate is so bad a manager, just those usual grouping of yapping fans who doss/demean everybody in their path.

Southgate did change the old guard, did bring the positives, but has never failed to try to introduce a latter of new talent,

upon them showing some potential.

Sancho,Bellingham,Cody & a couple of others. Under his tenure he got Sterling to improve his stature, but dropped him,if he wasn't delivering.

Kane is simply England's Talisman.

Southgate's record stands up to many an England manager. These new competitions have sort of confused the issue & smudged his star somewhat.

But even great International managers will have always left some great talent at home....and sometimes regretted it.

Other times their charges have delivered & semi-final & finals reached.

IMHO ..Maddison must go & a place found within the squad.

I believe, he ,Grealish, Foden, Rice Bellingham are players that can push our potential as last four candidates.

Not suggesting they all must be playing.

It's not even difficult to find space for him in a 26 man squad. If you look at a probable Southgate squad without Maddison. Assuming we takes one of Walker and James unfit.

Pickford

Pope

Ramsdale

Walker

Alexander-Arnold

Trippier

Shaw

Justin

Stones

Maguire

Dier

Coady

White

Henderson

Bellingham

Rice

Ward Prowse

Mount

Sterling

Saka

Foden

Grealish

Rashford

Kane

Abraham

Wilson

Options are either take one less defender, but Southgate isn't going to do that. Instead of Ward Prowse but I think you probably do need to take a 4th genuine midfielder. For me it's either leave Wilson, who's probably not going to play anyway or Grealish. A lot of people say Mount or Maddison but I think there is room for both and Mounts versatility makes him useful.

I hope I'm wrong but I can't see James being picked.  He's had no involvement for a very long time. He's not been 'coached'. There's not enough time to integrate him. It would just be like having a wild card. And i don't think Southgate wants that sort of character in the squad. Maybe if he was an out and out goalscorer like a young Rooney or Walcott I think . They got picked all those years ago. But not as another Midfielder who needs to fit in a system.

I also don't think our relativey lowly position and lack of European football has not helped his cause. Perversely his best chances are Southgate gets sacked after the wc or he moves to a major club as a starter.

He's like the Le Tissier of today.

Maddison is everything 100 million Grealish should be. If he doesn’t walk straight into the England side it’s a travesty. And the madness is that you can’t see any side paying 100 million for Madders. Top is going to have to dig deep if there’s any chance of retaining Madders and Tielemans.

Even if you give them an extra £100k a week, that's £5m a year each. Surely that's the best way to spend our money then spending to replace them!!

It’s the last minute of England’s final group game against Wales. Southgate’s stuttering side have drawn 1-1 against Iran and the USA, Kane scoring two penalties awarded for dodgy handballs and Sterling, Rashford, Grealish and Mount having butchered a hatful of chances. England need a win, Wales a draw to get through. It’s 0-0 and England have a free kick just to the left 25 yards out. Danny Ward is in goal.

The Dream

James Maddison has just been brought on for the last couple of minutes. Against the manager’s wishes he pushes aside Kane, Rashford and Eric Dier, steps up and curls a beauty into the top corner beyond Ward’s reach. England have won, Wales are out, Maddison is a national hero.

The Reality

Maddison is on a beach somewhere. Sterling, desperate to atone for a disastrous tournament, takes it and his powderpuff effort barely reaches the wall. England are out but Southgate is given a new contract by the FA.

Seems ridiculous that Grealish barely scores or assists and nobody bats an eyelid if he's involved yet Maddison provides four times the output and still doesn't seem close to contention.

All the talk has been about Maddison letting Southgate down with that casino stuff- the roles are reversed now. Southgate not including him in any of the three squads this year has been so poor.

Would you class Maddison as a ‘genuine midfielder’? I probably would. Forgetting that he wears the number 10, I think he is a CM (or at least can certainly perform there).

Another factually incorrect thing that was thrown at him; he can only play as a number 10. He'd shown he was more than capable of playing in central midfield and now he's added another string to his bow in the ability to play out wide too. His tactically astute and does goes defensive work, so on top of the added versatility he's developed, it's an absolute no brainer he goes to Qatar.

As has been said, the real debate should be how to get him into the team.

Agreed. Although, he shouldn’t have to be forced into the squad, he should be there on merit. Whether that means JWP or Mount (or whoever else) doesn’t go, so be it. No way should it be a closed shop but for injuries.
