Maddison

Is there any news on us actually even offering him a new contract? Or will he just refuse to even discuss one, not that I can see him doing that but just another worry after tielemans leaving

He'll run his contract down like Youri. Puts him in the box seat for his next career move. There's always a risk it might go wrong if a player picks up a serious injury but it seems to be a risk players are willing to take nowadays.

It'd be gross misconduct by Southgate if madders isnt selected. If he isn't selected, there's cleaely something else at play...casino? Or Madders being of independent mind and prepared to be eloquent in interviews?

In all probability,.Southgate will get him in the squad to avoid scrutiny, but he'll do well to get 5 mins pitch time.

One of the key reasons why England has failed to win anything since 1966 is that we fail to produce midfielders who have the technique to receive the ball in tight spaces and on the half turn. We produce a player who is a master of doing this and there is a possibility the England manager won’t take him. Complete madnesses.

They’re pretty much set up for life by their mid twenties so you can understand it

Not seen pressure from public opinion for a player to be included in a World Cup squad for a long, long while. This is Gascoigne-esque from almost every outlet now. The very awkward thing for Southgate is that I genuinely don't think Maddison was anywhere near his squad and probably still isn't if he had his own way.

The noise though is so so loud that if he doesn't pick him it's a personal vendetta and the significance of that is probably more damaging to Southgate than going out in the group stages would be. He's finished if he doesn't take him.

I've noticed this too, they're all saying it must be a personal thing, even the large mainstream outlets. Southgate can no longer leave him out for footballing reasons, if he does and England fail again he'll become a laughing stock again and back to making pizza ads.

Yeah. The media have largely been very pro Southgate even with the recent diabolical performances and resultsl and stick up for him when fans who find the football and his whole project extremely dull, but they will eventually turn and nearly all of them are united in their belief that he's got a problem with Maddison and its unacceptable.

It will be quite some backtracking though if he does pick him after not even considering him at the end of last season or this season in extended squads. He's really snookered and he knows it.

He'd do well to give Rodgers a call and ask the ulster Malcolm Tucker how he'd spin this situation to his credit :D

None of the pundits are saying who they’d leave out to take him

The sky mob were just saying that he has to go and souness at the same time that TAA has to go in case you need to find a goal from somewhere…… so maybe five right backs!  That’s why there’s no room for madders ffs !

In a 26 man squad it's not really a case of who needs to be left out for him, there's plenty of room.

It's completely absurd that it's only because of immense and overwhelming pressure from supporters, pundits and journalists that there is only a chance of Maddison getting on that plane, whatever happened to picking players on form?

I've been a harsh critic of Madders for a few season. As whilst I know he's a pundits fav & media darling. I didn't think his all round out put was consistent enough. I wanted less pirouettes and more graft. But the reality is his stats say he creates or scores at regular intervals. England looked insipid in recent matches. No guile or verve. Madders has bags of talent and can still improve more. I think he should get a crack for Eng. But I wonder if it's too late now for this tourno. Southgate is Mr Conservative through and through!!

You've surely got the graft now? His physicality, pressing, tracking and tackling and interceptions is accomplished for a player of his position. His critics are now having a real hard time finding fault in his game. He should be our most influential English player right now, he has everything.

or just the best players :dunno: because maddison is not just a lingard throwing out some good form.  He is simply a quality player.  The laughable thing is that it’s more likely southgate and takes rashford because he’s had 5 good games ignoring maddison’s 18 months

Ignoring the World Cup for a moment, I suspect there will be interest for Maddison in January.

Newcastle will be certain to test the water again with bigger money, and there will likely be other clubs sniffing now given his form.

Can’t see us selling JM or Youri in January.
