Maddison

Yes that could very well happen based on past history with this manager. He has his basic route 1 style of football and if that doesn’t work he doesn’t have the foggiest what to do. Often gets caught frozen like a deer in the headlights.

It’s tough we all want madders not just to go but to shine. Will southgate allow him to? We shall see how much he has changed in a few weeks time.

I agree. 2018 WC semi ran out of ideas and lost. Euros last year again lost a winning position. The penalties were a fiasco rather just bad luck. Madders should have more caps by now let alone will he get in squad.

Seriously amazes me Southgate might not take him. Fair enough if he feels he doesn’t suit his preferred starting line up etc but imagine being a goal down and looking behind you to the bench and having a player like him ready to come and do something special to save your bacon, instead of the six full backs he’ll have sat behind him.

With some of the injuries and gaps in the squad, I can't see how Southgate can avoid picking him.

There's space for him. Just up to Southgate now to do the right thing and pick him. Even if he won't play as much as the obvious favourites, at least it is recognition for how Maddison played and performed.

Better late than never, as they say...

There was no 'casino incident'. Maddison didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't disciplined by England, unlike others who have broken rules. Whatever the reason Southgate doesn't pick Maddison, it has got nothing whatsoever to do with Maddison's trip to a casino a few days after being sent home from an England camp because he had a cough and the team management didn't want him to travel on the plane with the rest of the squad.

Why does using the word incident imply he did?

'Incident'

noun

1.

an instance of something happening; an event or occurrence.

This morning I dropped my five-year-old off at school. Should I describe that as the 'school incident'? I then dropped into the local shop to buy some milk. Would that count as an 'incident at the local Co-op'?

In common parlance the word is generally used to describe an event or occurrence that is unusual or noteworthy, neither of which applies in Maddison's case.

I want us all to be celebrating Southgate & his merry men..

I want the miserable & negative fans, to be grovelling & looking for redemption. And begging him to sign a 7 year extension...

Southgate has a hill top gathering with all those that opposed him...

And with the 5 loaves & 2 fish,he swats them all driving them off our fair Islands...:englandsmile4wf:

Then he thanks all loyal fans, with free new waistcoats & replicas of Harry Kane's nose & chin..

Unless he has a personality transplant it'll be hard. He's wasted one of the most exciting crop of attacking players the country has had, certainly in my recent memory.

Seems like a nice, if not incredibly boring, bloke. His football makes me want to rip my eyes out though. It's like giving Tony Pulis Man City's squad and watching them play with 8 defensive players and trying to hit teams on the break. Absolutely gross.

We have had better squads than we have now and still won nowt , we always seem to run short of brain when we need it. Even the genius of Gascoigne didn't help.

maybe late 90’s/00’s but right now I don’t think we have had many better especially in terms of depth.

should be building the team around the form players! the debate should be who plays with him not whether he goes or not!

If he doesn't get picked it is a personal issue Southgate has with him. Nothing to do with the 'casino incident' it must be something else.

a lot of players that will go have had worse incidents than Madders has too so it must be something else.

Would love an England manager that wasn't so rigid and actually looks at the form, just be bold no one cares if we get out played and beat by a better side. More people will be pissed off if we go out by playing 5 at the back and being scared to attack.

It's going to be interesting on Thursday as it will be the first question Southgate gets asked either way.

If he doesnt pick him it will be why not and if he does it will be why has it taken so long.

you have seen the potential CB's haven't you? We have a lot of good attacking players but our Centre backs aren't anywhere good enough.

Yeah I look at the two cb’s and I do struggle that is no doubt the weakest area we have had in years. Good point and I agree, especially giving the manager is defensive too lol it is hardly Ferdinand, Campbell, or Adams, southgate

England have two major weaknesses: 1) Our defence, which is sub-international standard, and 2) The fact that we have very tactically conservative manager who is unable to respond appropriately when things are going against us on the pitch. Combined, these factors will make it very hard to win the competition, particularly given the strength of the likes of Brazil and Argentina among others.

totally agree with the strength in depth going forward but the problem is he is likely to pick 3 CB's too which is because he doesn't trust 2.

To get the best out of what we have you have to play a low block.

Maguire will start so you have to then stick a DM in the team that is going to sit and cover (probably Rice)

So as we are stronger at the front and we have a few injuries at full back you play 4 defensive minded players.

            Pickford

 Justin Tomori Maguire Shaw

      Rice Bellingham

  Saka Maddison Foden

               Kane

BUT if you are playing 3 at the back Chris Smalling should go for me. He was outstanding against us for Roma in a 3. Then you could play more attacking full backs to give you the width.

                     Pickford

Trent Tomori Smalling Maguire Shaw

           Bellingham Maddison

              Saka Kane Foden

We only have one striker unless Stirling wakes up. Harry gets injured , we will probably be firing blanks.
