Maddison

As others have mentioned, the free kick at the end was made for Madders. There was also a shot from Mount from outside the area which was exactly the position Maddison likes to shoot from, and there was bound to be more of those opportunities with how deep France’s back line were sitting, inviting shots from that sort of distance. Feel a bit sorry for him and hope it doesn’t encourage him to look for a move to a bigger club.

I said over and over to anyone who was in my vicinity when the squad was picked that JWP should've gone for that EXACT scenario.

10 mins left, losing, bring him in and the opponents would be so frightened of conceding a free kick, they'd invite more pressure on themselves.

In the event, JWP could also have been the alternative penalty CV taker to Kane (tho the pressure on the lad would've been awful to have replaced Kane as taker)

If Kane had both legs hanging off then he still takes that pen

Yeah I don't think it's a club thing, although it's easy for our fans to think this given both him and Vardy now have been criminally wasted, I think it's just his style of play.

It is. Southgate has picked players from us before and has spoken of how well we do things. It's nothing personal to the club.

Grealish gets a cameo role at Man C these days, whereas Madders has pulled us to mid table almost single handed and is in the best form possible. Southgate has become stale by the politics of the FA. Madders miles ahead of Grealish in my book.

Maddison will probably be at the next one, if we qualify , but almost certainly won't be playing for us by then. I hope this forum will still be supporting him but somehow I doubt it.

Yeah this. Everyone been bleating on about him playing for 6 weeks, when he leaves and then gets picked we'll all be laughing at him like Maguire/Chilwell etc

Last night tailor made for Maddison who brings quality in areas we were lacking, and also he’s a bit of a relative unknown to their players - which is always a bonus. Surely it would have made sense to roll the dice / use your wildcard with 10 mins to go?

Agree with this.  You could have predicted his substitutions though.  We actually played quite well throughout the tournament but i don't feel Southgate will ever win us a tournament.

The players that get the media hype are the ones being picked. JM had no chance while pundits weren't considering him. That all changed once England started losing games in the nation's league and he was selected by most of them.

Southgate should have come out and said that I'm not picking him because I don't think he is up to it. Instead he gets in the squad after the pressure and doesn't get used.

A late addition to a squad of 26 players for (at most) 16 man games (two of which he was injured for). For a team that made it to the QFs with ease, and with no other major injuries.

It's really not difficult to understand. Unless you need it to be.

The argument for Madders is more than him just playing for Leicester.

In April 2021 Grealish was rightly ahead of Maddison but the form of Maddison over the last 1.5 seasons meant that he deserved much more consideration than he got.

To leave him on the bench and having a mediocre player like Mount ahead is nothing short of appalling.

If/when Maddison goes he should be giving more of a chance should he keep the numbers up.

Southgates vendetta against Maddison for casino gate and overlooking other scandals reflects very badly. Not to mention the cobblers about picking players on merit.

If you isolate a players international career to a single selection then I can understand why you say this.

If Southgate had any interest in him, he would have been used prior to the tournament to see how he fits into the squad.

As it is, he has put him in with no intention of playing him. Hopefully JM was aware of this and isn't too despondent by his treatment by the current England set up.

Southgate has also mentioned he likes to pick players that do play Champions League football regularly so playing for a Chelsea will always trump playing for Leicester so unfortunately I think it will unsettle Maddison because he will want a move to improve his England chances

In four years time , we will probably be assessing Braybrook's chances . For now we need Maddison to continue his excellent form for us. If he does we will be safe and then we may have to wish him goodbye. We have seen this many times before and we will cope just fine.

This is all set up for him to move to another club. There is absolutely no scenario that he stays.

Mount won us the penalty by the way.

Southgate talks nonsense.

Pickford, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Saka, Phillips (Euros), and Grealish have all gotten game time whilst not competing in the CL regularly. Maguire doesn’t even play in the PL regularly.

I’ve thought over many times (Southgate vs Maddison) and I think the former simply just has an irrational dislike of the latter.

My take is that he'll wish to leave simply as he wishes to max out his career. Nothing to do with England.

He seems the kids lad that'd love the pressure of playing for a big club.

I would be astonished if he sees Newcastle as the next step. They are basically an extension of us in terms of profile and celebrity....I like the Geordies as a fanbase but the lesson should be taken from shearer, who secretly deep down must've wished he'd played for a big club.  Blackburn - Newcastle similar groove to Leicester to Newcastle. The lad wants a big club and medals and footballing fame. He's exhausted his limits with us and we've both done very very well out of his spell here.

I’m confident he would’ve scored from the free kick Rashford choked on.

I’m really suprised nobody has discussed the scenario of kane burying the penalty and taking the game to extra time. It’s a completely different ball game now as we’ve seen with the other games.

the momentum shifts back to England.

what would have been Frances strategy and what changes would southgate have made if any?
play for penalties or learn from the past and make changes that go for Frances jugular?

could this have been the moment he proved us all wrong? Maybe just maybe throws madders on and tells him run the show and feed kane or take the free kicks.

this ‘what if?’ Is what pains me more than anything else. the world needed this game to go to extra time to see what England can really do. Hey if they still lost then that’s fine but I won’t accept England players comments that they gave everything. Not a chance there was more left in the tank. Will we ever know?

We had two penalties and two very promising free kicks awarded by the referee. We scored once. Otherwise we never seriously threatened. France are world champions but by top club standards only an average team. Our hugely overpaid players lacked the intelligence to open them up. The probability is they would have scored the winner in extra time. Its over , let's move on , we have some critical games coming up.
