Maddison

Several possibilities:

We could get disqualified for fielding twelve players.

But otherwise it depends who he replaces. If he plays instead of Vardy we probably don't score as many goals; if he plays instead of Huth or Morgan we probably let in a lot more goals; if he plays in goal it would be a disaster...

Hypotheticals are ridiculous, of course. But basically, you change one single thing that happens between King Power buying the club and sometime around Easter 2016, and we don't win the league.

I mean it obviously would have been Okazaki.

Anyone see the stats they brought up comparing when Maddison has played to when he’s not played? On MOTD.

We are so reliant on keeping him fit to generate goal chances.

Not sure Izzet was playing in a worse midfield than Maddison has been the past 2 seasons tbh. Maddison has completely carried our midfield the past 18 months while Ndidi and Tielemans have been well well below par.

Even so, Maddison is just the far better technical player. You stick Izzet in this side instead of Maddison we’d be worse off and if you stick Maddison in O’Neill’s or Adams’ sides instead of Izzet we’d be better off, let’s be honest.

Izzet was a great player for us, but let’s not be silly, it’s not really a contest between him and Maddison.

Completely agree. Izzett was playing with a much better midfield than we have now.

Maddison carrying the team is completely right. Muzzy was one of a few good midfield players we had under O’Neil

Raises a fun one of ‘best 11’ since 2015.

And yes the point of changing one single thing about the title side is correct but looking at the players we have been lucky to have since, what would be a great ‘11’? Players in the prime at the time of playing for us of course.

           Schmeichel

Ricardo Morgan Huth Fuchs

        Tielemans Kante

Mahrez Maddison Barnes

                Vardy

Other players in a 25 man squad;

Ward (not really any other competition in goal)

Simpson

Evans

Maguire

Chilwell

Ndidi

Drinkwater

Albrighton
Okazaki

Iheanacho

Not really sure who I’d add as the last 4, maybe Justin as a fifth full back option. Next centre back would probably be Fofana. Maybe Soyuncu in terms of performances for us.

Ulloa maybe.

There was a lot about it in the pre-match too and you only had to look at KDH or Praet anytime they got the ball near halfway. Neither of them had a clue whether to go left right or through the middle or when to make a pass. All energy but not a single bit of creativity. I just hope Glover's got a spreadsheet with the "£30-40m" and "new no 10" columns full of options.

Harsh. While they don't have Maddison's creative vision and nous, they're not totally without creativity. What they really don't have (and to be fair, not many do) is his ability to be dazzlingly creative blindingly fast. And in modern football, he who hesitates is often lost.

Hard to argue with that first XI really. You could maybe debate Tielemans for Drinkwater or Ndidi but Tielemans had the big moment in the cup final which probably tips him over the edge, hard to argue about anyone else.

Don't agree with Maguire on the bench though, I think Soyuncu's and Fofana's one good season each for us were both better than Maguire's one good season for us. I think Maguire is probably only our 6th best centre back since we were promoted overall.

My thinking was you wouldn’t need Ndidi alongside Kante and Drinkwater, as good as he was the promotion and title seasons, the latter I do think Kane helped him along. Tielemans and Kante probably compliment each other.

Fair point about Maguire, I think it is a position we have generally done well with and had quite a lot of talent until the past 18 months.

KDH had 4 bursts over the halfway line yesterday. Each time ended with hesitation and losing the ball or a precise lay off to Barnes. Praet similar, at one point tripping over his own feet deciding whether to go to Tete or Barnes and in the end doing neither. Both do all the neat and tidy stuff but there's only Madders or - on his increasingly rare in-form days - Youri who can find players ahead of them.

Maddison said himself that if his passing stats were too high it means he's not taking enough risks, Mendy will have a much better passing stat but he rotates the ball and doesn't make many key passes or assists. Defensively is not his thing but he will graft out of possession.

It's quite easy to have a passing stat well into the 90's percentile if all you do is make 10 yard sideway passes, that's not Maddison's role, he's our creator.

I'm not just talking about pass completion, but the types of passing, the position of the passes, the target of the passes.

Shearer never played for a big club, was he not elite?

I get that this is an easy goading remark, but what appears to have been lost in the mists of time is that when Shearer joined Newcastle United, we were legitimate title challengers, in the Champions League and in Cup Finals. He didn't join a mid-table side purely out of home-grown love for the club. He joined because, at that time, we looked like a trophy was around the corner. But then Dalglish ripped the heart out of the team (Ferdinand, Ginola), Shearer got injured, Dalglish was replaced by Gullit who broke the team further. Those were his prime years. And throughout he was courted by Man Utd, Liverpool, Juventus, etc.

Good I’m glad you said that because whilst at Leicester, Maddison has had 2 top 5 finishes and just missed out champions league on the last day and won the FA cup.

In fact won more at Leicester than Shearer did at Newcastle. There has been plenty of rumoured interest of courtship by the top 6 for Maddison but like shearer, injuries at certain times prevented it.

The comparison is stark, I do think Shearer was obviously a top 6 quality player but then I also do with Maddison.

His stats speak for themselves.

Newcastle’s average points during Shearer’s 10 seasons was 56.4

Maddison’s at Leicester's is 54.5. So similar standings really.

Given how vague the statements usually are this could mean that he has had a sore throat or is on the verge of multiple organ failure.

Well he seemed OK today. Seen as he was down the grosvenor with Harvey, kdh and Thomas again this afternoon. Club didn't need to build a golf course. Just buy a few pool and snooker tables and the odd dartboard lol

Yes because going to a casino requires the same level of performance as playing professional football lol

Maddison - 9 goals & 5 assists in 17 league games.

Mason Mount - 3 goals & 2 assists in 22 league games

Grealish - 3 goals & 2 assists in 18 league games

Foden - 7 goals & 3 assists in 21 league games.

And Maddison plays in a significantly worse team than the other three. This guy is due his flowers. The football world needs to put some respect on his name.

...Foden and Grealish would have significantly better figures if they were playing for us!!!

Grealish and  Foden would be more free and not constrained by the players around them. They are a cog in a rather expensive team, which has an emphasis  on certain other players.

End product and creativity through passing and he's pretty much elite level, they will be queuing up for him this summer as he'll be available for £50m, we may get a bit more if there's a proper bidding war. The goals and assists he brings makes him worth double that when you consider what the likes of Grealish, Havertz and other attacking midfielders have transferred for in recent years who can't get near Maddisons numbers.

And to be honest he could do even better in an “elite” side with better players around him. But hope he stays.
