The extent of Cameron and Osbourne's austerity policies were not only callous but they have since proved highly damaging, but in my view, the Conservative party stopped being an even remotely credible conservative party is when they effectively became the Brexit party. Brexit involves taking a huge economic leap of faith with very little support from credible economists. That's not very conservative in my view.
