Kasper Schmeichel

I’m assuming he’s expected his defenders, to defend?

It ain’t rocket science

🤷‍♂️

Kasper is part of that defence though, at times he should also be providing some kind of aerial presence when it's clear he could claim a ball.

Breathtaking in certain big games for us, especially in Europe.

He's made for them, isn't he? Both for club and country.

Good luck to the bloke who replaces him in 18 months, you are taking over from an icon.

What a save!

Finished? Your joking.

Still our number 1 for years to come hopefully.

The man's a legend and deserves so much more credit.

Probably one of the saves of the season, particularly as it was so crucial.

He makes some mistakes, but when you need him when it really matters, he never lets you down.

You are right, he deserves so much more credit, but so many posters on here just love to criticise him. He has been immense over the last 10 years; we are blessed he has been between the sticks for that period of time.

I think the thing is with Kasper, he’s set the bar so high over the years that when he doesn’t have the best of seasons, and at his age, people will be quick to write him off.

He’s still got a lot to give in my eyes, and more than any one of our players in the big games he comes up with the goods. Champions League v Sevilla, FA Cup Final, time and time again you can rely on him to turn up and be a leader and do something that is incredible that will talked about after the game. Top man

Gets plenty written about what he isn't good at, but his positive qualities should also be recognised when we are sticking the boot in.

His positives far outweigh his negatives. That save at the end was top class.

World class save that literally keeps us in the tournament. They’d have gone on to win in extra time last night if he hadn’t kept that out

Those on here that wish him gone, please have a long look in the mirror. He’s a top quality goal-keeper who’s played behind a highly dodgy defence and still pulls off worldies to keep us in games.

That was an unbelievable save. Incredible reaction speed.

Just read about studies of the best way for keepers to defend one-on-ones.  Two researchers analyzed data across PL seasons and came to partial consensus:

Centrally around the 6 yard box, engage and either spread (do the splits) or smother.  In wide areas around the 6 yard box, engage and block (one knee down) or smother.  Further from goal, or with defenders closing the striker down, set up and wait.  (I oversimplify a bit.)  Rushing the shooter but staying upright was never the best option.

Kasper was singled out by both as an outlier for his consistent use of starfish spreading (or jumping).  Mixed reviews:

Though “some non-standard techniques such as Kasper Schmeichel’s starfish technique may not be flagged as optimal in our models”, Beal wrote in an email, those same techniques “had been very successful for the individual”.

Having watched four seasons’ worth of tape for his project, Harrison isn’t quite as reserved in his judgment. “Any time it’s close range, Schmeichel will always spread,” he said. “He saves loads of central one-v-ones, but the wide ones he just gets megged all the time. It would be interesting to see if he could adapt his game to start doing a block or a smother out wide.”

Imagine spending your whole working day analysing footage of Kasper’s starfish
