If this is the England that cricket will get under McCullum then the sport is in for a treat.

Yeah the openers might not be up to scratch, but a core of Root, Stokes and Bairstow to knock over for any side is very strong. They can pace an innings with Root's patient but efficient batting, just ticking over steadily. Or they can accelerate with Stokes and/or Bairstow. The whole mentality has shifted into more playing more freely. As if they've been held back by the previous regime.

Then you're bound to get a player or two chip in with a solid 30 or 40 along the way.

It'll mean that most matches will be entertaining. The last two years where you can almost predict there'll be a few collapses per tour - you can almost sense those days are long gone. England now give themselves a chance in any game. They'll back themselves instead of falling under the weight of pressure. That's pretty frightening for any opposition really.

The successful high chases against NZ and most definitely this one finished off tomorrow with ease are a big statement in Test cricket. Only 119 needed tomorrow - could finish it off with their eyes closed!

This is it for me.

McCullum, and Stokes as captain, have installed a new ethos and belief. The difference is night and day.

Agree also. It’s also been mentioned copious amounts of times by the commentators. They’re focussing on winning rather than not losing.

Tomorrow is set up lovely. I would have us slightly ahead.

If you’ve seen This Could go Anywhere on Netflix, McCullum says on there that the thing he enjoyed most about captaincy was giving his team mates more freedom. Can tell he means it too, stacks up to what’s being said above.

If England do chance this down, teams will be so worried about batting first, no matter how good the wicket is. They will realise England have no fear, negativity or any thoughts of shutting up shop.

Test cricket is on the verge of almost being reinvented…….tomorrow is huge, in many ways.

Can't remember when it was but Root deciding not to chase a relatively low score in NZ was the moment it had to change.

I did say ‘on the verge of’. These last 4 England Tests have seen a whole new ethos of how England want to play Test cricket.
McCullum & Stokes have made it very clear how they want to play, even the players are more positive during interviews & the way they want to play.
Like I said, teams could be concerned about batting first, knowing England will have no fear of chasing in the 4th innings……that hasn’t happened before.
