What I would say is that Sri Lanka have shown that intelligent bowling can absolutely cause England issues, even though they don’t have the fire power to roll us over cheaply. Much better teams have rocked up against Bazball and not really known what to do, whereas these clearly have a plan, bowl in a very disciplined way and aren’t intimidated. I really rate them.

What would everyone’s all time England XI be? In test format?

I’ve had a think and quite like this:

Cook

Stewart (WK)

Thorpe

Root

Pietersen

Stokes

Flintoff

Swann

Broad

Gough

Anderson

Depends how far back you’re gonna go. A lot would say Alan Knott or someone like Les Ames were far better than Stewart for example. Laker was better than Swann too.

In my lifetime I’d go:

Strauss

Cook

Bell

Root

Pietersen

Stokes

Flintoff

Prior

Swann

Broad

Anderson

Mine was obviously in my lifetime too.

Would imagine many people would have at least 7/8 of the same.

Might be controversial but time to invite only the top-ranked 4 or 5 teams to play Test series against us in England. This home summer has been a waste of time. Having 2 England XIs play each other would have been more productive and probably more entertaining.

Basically what the ICC want isn’t it? Also, what happens when England drops out of the top four or five, as they have done quite recently?

The teams that are in the top four or five will always want to play us, we are massive.

A third full Lord's with ticket prices at £95.

Sadly another step on the path to having India and Australia here endlessly who will fill the grounds.

ECB are a joke. God knows what they will charge for Zimbabwe next year.

Just glad more journalists are picking up on it now. George Dobell's been warning about this for a while.

Death of A Gentleman still makes valid points a decade on.

They'll be fine next year because Indian fans will fill the places out.

Aren't we the only Test nation to play more than one match at the same ground, too?

No, but we're the only Test nation with plenty of viable alternative venues who choose to do that.

India bring the English fans out for test matches. You don’t get too many India fans at test matches in England, a lot more for ODI’s and T20’s.
