Statement about Max

After second practice on Saturday in Sao Paulo, the stewards released the following statement explaining the €50,000 fine handed to Red Bull racer Verstappen: "The stewards heard from the driver of car 33 (Max Verstappen) and team representative. The stewards also examined a fan video taken from across the track, CCTV video footage taken from pit lane and in car footage from car 14, car 33, car 44 and car 77.

"In all, these videos gave a clear picture of what occurred in parc fermé following the qualifying session.

"Verstappen exits the car, then moves to the rear of his car. He then takes his gloves off and puts his right hand at the slot-gap of the rear wing of his car. He then moves to car 44 and repeats the exercise, touching the rear wing in two places, once on either side of the DRS actuation device, but on the bottom rear side of the wing, in the area of the slot gap and never near the actuator or the end fixation points."

"Clear, high definition video from the rear facing roll-hoop camera on car 44 shows that there is absolutely no movement of any of the wing elements on car 44 when Verstappen touches the back of the wing and the stewards are satisfied, from watching all the videos, his body position and the video of the wing, that there was insignificant force when Verstappen touched the wing.

"It is clear to the stewards that it has become a habit of the drivers to touch cars after qualifying and the races. This was also the explanation of Verstappen, that it was simply habit to touch this area of the car which has been a point of speculation in recent races between both teams.

"This general tendency has been seen as mostly harmless and so has not been uniformly policed. Nevertheless, it is a breach of the parc fermé regulation and has significant potential to cause harm.

"Considering the fact that no direct harm was caused in this case, in the opinion of the stewards, and that no earlier precedent of penalties for this exists – on the one hand; but that it is a breach of the regulation and has potential for serious consequences on the other, the stewards determine to take action in this case and order a fine of €50,000."

The stewards warned all teams and drivers that "future breaches may incur different penalties".

Season over now bar a couple of DNF's for Verstappen then.  Such a shame as it looked like it could have been an interesting weekend.  This season could have been an epic but it's actually been shite (unless you're an Anybody But Hamilton of course)

Sums Mercedes season up perfectly.

Massive pressure on Toto Wolff now to explain their position on this.

Very strange.  If it now bends under slight pressure then that would suggest a material change.  But I believe I read it's the same spec of wing they've used previously.

There must be more to this as the sprint starts soon with nobody the wiser about where the pole sitter is starting.

Confusion all round it seems.

If that's the case as well how many titles have they cheated over the years? Congratulations on 6 world titles Seb!

Ignorant to the process but I imagine that wing had been tested countless times in previous races.

Be fascinating to hear the official response from Mercedes because this is an absolute farce.

Possibly, reckon he could get 10/12 place in the sprint but then got to add 5 places on to that

Genuinely think Mercedes would prefer he starts from the back and not get caught up in any pile-up at the start.  Red Bull already have a very firm hand on the championship after today and a DNF for Hamilton here would be terminal.

I think it's fairly obvious there's been some sort of malfunction on the wing elements, but Mercedes aren't able to provide definitive proof to the stewards, so they had no choice but to disqualify him.

It would appear so.  Craig Slater on Sky saying the stewards have agreed Mercedes were not deliberately seeking to gain an advantage as the middle part of the wing was compliant, it was at the extremities where the wing deformed enough to pass the gauge through.

Such a shame for the season to end so limply (although I doubt Red Bull could have been caught anyway) but this on Mercedes who haven't been good enough this season.

Practically killed any buzz about a good final championship battle now. They’ve made the first genuinely interesting title race in years boring.

This is what has frustrated me.

Especially with this season being the most exciting and entertaining for a good few years too.

So now we have Newey talking to the FIA before qualifying even started.  It's a shame influences off the track are having an impact of what happens on it.  Leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

Mind you, Red Bull know all about it.  Favouring Seb's car over Webber's on many an occasion with various modifications.  And now we've got smug Horner on the F1 show for the next two hours with a big grin on his face.

I hate the sprint race concept but is it worth watching tonight?

Has the potential to be exciting.  Bottas to send it at turn one.

Yeah I’m hoping for this to change my mind on the sprint races with a few surprises
