RB Leipzig and Benfica lead race to sign Leicester City starlet Tavares

Leicester City are in a battle to fend off interest from elite clubs in midfield rising star Sidnei Tavares, Football Insider understands.

The Portugal youth international has broken into the Foxes first team this season with three appearances.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Benfica and RB Leipzig are keeping close tabs on Tavares and are keen to sign him.

Tellingly, the 19-year-old is out of contract in summer and is free to discuss terms ahead of a potential switch.

Leicester are keen to tie him down to a new deal but have yet to secure an agreement.

Tavares signed his first professional contract in 2019 and has been on the books with the Foxes since the age of nine.

Bored of this guy. He's one of the best of a very average bunch, Thomas and VDC aside. If he wants to go then let him.

Sort of player Celtic should be after. Promise him first team football for a couple of seasons and sell him back to England or Europe for £20m in a couple of seasons.

Exact same sort of approach tha worked so well for us with Dembele.

Problem is we don't seem to know our arse from our elbow in terms of transfers and scouting at the moment.

I can see it now, Taveres and Alves leave, Beaglehole remains.

Absolutely. The man has supposedly turned down 1st team manager roles at a lower level as he doesn't want to leave the gig he has here.

Alves is in contract negotiations are the minute with Rudkin, so you don't need to worry about that.

Interesting. Any ideas why he isn't playing in the U18's much yet?

Probably because he only turned 16 yesterday. Clearly a talent, but let the boy progress in his own time.

Thats pretty common a lot of coaches like the security of youth football, rather than uprooting your family from one end of the country for 8 months in Oldham then 9 months at forest green etc.

Plenty of other 15 year olds play U18 football. We've had a couple in recent years (Kian Pennant)

When we played Man Utd at U23 level earlier in the season I worked out that the average age of their team was 18.0 whereas ours was above 20. Half of their team were 16 or 17. We wait too long to promote players, and then they hang around at the same level for too long, meaning the players who should be promoted are being delayed (Fitzhugh and T.Pennant for instance are 19 later in the year and have been in the U18's for years now). It's a circle that's been going on for ages, I wonder if it'll ever get sorted out.

no i've only got a small snippet of information, but the above is absolutely the case. Not sure about the ins and outs of the why he is/isn't playing at a higher age group.

If we play 15 yo in the under 18s, how do we develop the 17 yo? If we play 17 yo in the under 23s how do we develop the 19 yo? Even if you ignore the difference in physicality in a 15 yo to an 18 yo and the possibility of injury, it's a bit more complicated that some people are making out.

There needs to be a speeding up through the age groups, we can all agree on that. I think it is happening as it is much better this year but prior to that it had bottle necked through having too many players over the age of 18 in the U23's that weren't getting loan moves.

It's not the common thing for the U18's to be fielding loads of 15 year olds but the very best technical players at that age are usually a few years ahead of their age group and likely in the 18's at 15/16 and then the 23's a year later.

Obviously physicality plays a part, if the technically gifted kid is still a scrawny urchin then maybe they wouldn't yet be ready for U18's but some definitely will be.

U19 go on loan  to league 1 or 2 and the best to championship clubs so simple and any star player  goes to first team  or sell them and win money it's that difficult I don't think so

You're right, we just order other teams to take our players on loan, it is that simple.
