Premier League 2021/22 Thread

Abu Dhabi own Man City, Qatar own PSG, Saudi Arabia own Newcastle.

Believing otherwise is like believing that Russia didn't ACTUALLY invade numerous parts of Ukraine just because they pretended it was random "freedom fighters" and "mercenaries."

It's offensive that the Premier League pretend to believe that Saudi aren't buying Newcastle but its not really surprising. The truth is irrelevant if someone's making money.

If Abu Dhabi are allowed to own Man City then why shouldn’t Saudi Arabia be allowed to own newcastle ?

Just do a bit of research on Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, and you’ll probably begin to understand.

I know about him …..I just didn’t realise that the UAE were without their own skeletons ……

They certainly aren’t, like a lot of us have said, there isn’t many owners that aren’t, particularly the super rich. It’s just the fact that this particular chap is quite openly part of a cruel dictatorship, and there is a lot more criticism levelled at him and his peers than any other current owner. Roman certainly has a very shady private life, but it’s usually confined to the realms of his business, and the same goes for both Man City’s owners and PSG’s, if you dig hard enough you would find enough on them to raise an eyebrow, and even King Power’s links to the Thai monarchy is bound to be problematic.

But, you don’t even have to go digging for articles on Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, it’s pretty rife and the one glaring article that certainly leaves one wide eyed, if the incident of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

But it has been heavily documented even before their arrival in Tyneside of the human rights issues, I mean women were only permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia in the last year or so……… we’ve managed to put a man on the moon in our time, yet a nation has only just allowed women to drive?

Newcastle United: UK blocks details of Premier League talks to protect Saudi relations

The UK government is refusing to reveal what it told the Premier League about the Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United because it could "harm" relations with Saudi Arabia.

The government says it did not get involved in the deal, which has been criticised by human rights activists.

But the Foreign Office is known to have held meetings with the Premier League to discuss it.

The BBC asked for details of these meetings under Freedom of Information.

The Foreign Office responded with a redacted copy of the agenda for one meeting, which took place on 14 May 2020, and a redacted copy of the minutes of another meeting on 10 June 2020.

Shady as fuk. Basically, MBS told us he will be buying newcastle and we told him thats not possible and then he threatened to expose our deals with them (and a homemade porn of boris giving it to piers morgan) so move along nothing to see here.. Khashoggi.. Cash-shown who?what?

But, cant do anything about it so goodluck to Newcastle i suppose.

Doesn’t fill you with confidence does it….. basically the government are even admitted they’ve somewhat turned a blind eye.

The truth will our eventually, and it will probably be messy.

It’s common knowledge that western governments including the UK are in bed with the Saudis. The meetings have been redacted to save face on the UK side if I had to guess as they probably tried to help the Saudis out. I mean if they are willing to arm the Saudi regime it’s not at all inconceivable for the government to help them to buy a football club.

It’s the whole thing of where you draw the line. Abu Dhabi and the UAE are clearly by no means squeaky clean but it’s unfair to compare them to Saudi Arabia. It’s a completely different scale of bad.

By ‘they’, you mean ‘we’.

U.K. companies make profits and pay taxes here.  it’s a bit sh1t isn’t it …… but it’s the reality of politics and the way the world goes around. I guess football is big business - that ship has sailed and the consequence of this take over is that the fit and proper rules that now exist will be extended to encompass this. BUT, I’m pretty sure that this surely won’t be something that can actually be enforced with regimes that we have normal relations with.

Is it 'we'? Or do you know if peach0000 is willing to arm the Saudi regime?

I know I'm not, it's just unfortunate that none of the government (which I didn't vote for) cares to ask my opinion.

And this is what I'm referring too. Money doesn't make any team a force overnight. They're gonna start buying bang average players like this.

Then sell them on in 6 months if they stay up probably.

The whole Newcastle squad will potentially be up for sale with the odd exception next summer .

My feeling towards all of this is this is just Ashley playing his final game with the fan base. He’s spent years ripping the soul out the club and with this sale he’s finally destroyed it, the fans just haven’t realised it yet. Ashley, love him or hate him is a smart guy and I reckon this is a sort of final **** you to the fan base. I think it’s quite funny.

I genuinely don’t see it working out for them, not because I’m jealous, I know a lot of people are suggesting they’re a good purchase, but when does anything Mike Ashley touches not turn to shit? Just can’t trust that this isn’t purely another means for those involved to make a shit tonne of money. Misguided ambitions, I don’t get the same feeling about this as I did when Man City were taken over, just all seems a bit of a false dawn to me.

But time will tell.

They'll focus on players they can attract and players who can keep them up at first.

Long term, a certain band of players wont go there if they arent in Europe or challenging for trophies for example regardless of money.

My guess is that summer 2022 will be focused on aging 'legends' and hot prospects though that depends on what the new manager would want of course.

You mean 2 time premier league champion Joleon Lescott?

Medals don't define how good a player is. Djimi Traore won the Champions League but Eric Cantona never won it.

Lescott was a decent defender but not on the levels of what they get now, that was more of my point. People are talking about World Class players joining Newcastle, because they've got money now, but it won't happen overnight and may not happen at all. They've got to be challenging for trophies to attract World Class players and they need a good managers first also.

Yes

But tarks is probably too old to be in Newcastle’s prem league winning squad if it happens …….

Sorry I thought you were likening the signing and making them out to be bad. Mam City had to bring in the likes of Lescott to build the team to a level where the better players were willing to join. Newcastle will go through a period of that, Tarkowski is just the start of thr building process.

So we agree with each other - btw, you have the comb, I have no need for it……….

As I've just said in another post and I think someone else said similar, they will have to, like Man City did, sign players like Tarkowski to build the squad to a level above where it is now before they can start signing big money stars.

I've made the Traore argument myself many times, I'm well aware of that. But to put Lescott in that bracket is harsh, you don't play in two title winning side as a crap player. He was what they needed and could get at the time and was part of the building blocks for where the club are now.

You're right that Newcastle might never get it right, man city don't always, and ate beaten by clubs with less to spend. But right now signing solid players like Tarkowski to push up the table over the next few years is exactly what Newcastle need to do.

I disagree.

Newcastle's primary objective is to stay up this season, January is a tough market in which to operate and getting players hitting the ground running is not guaranteed.

Tarkowski and Lingard are 2 players that make Newcastle stronger immediately, are good enough to stay as valued players in a squad throughout their transitional period, and presumably available without needing to absolutely break the bank. Both would be sensible business.

Someone mentioned Lescott earlier as if that was disparaging. He was exactly the kind of sensible "bridge" signing (and other players like Gareth Barry) for Man City that Tarkowski/Lingard would be for Newcastle.

It won't be possible to make Newcastle Premier League winners quickly.... probably.

It will be possible to improve them out of sight pretty quickly with a handful of astute signings though. Tarkowski wouldn't be a bad start and Lingard has proven his worth to teams over the short term, if not the long term.

It seems pretty obvious to me that it's possible for them to start competing for the European positions pretty quickly, Europa at first, next season probably, which puts them on a collision course with the likes of us, Everton, West Ham and the like in the immediate future. The imbalance will be when they are able to splurge endless funds if they lose top players during a season, which the others mentioned can't.

Projects take time, but there can be instant success too. With the money they now have behind them, I think they'll become competitive more quickly than many imagine. Hope I'm wrong.

Tbf it’s exactly what Man City did and it worked. Three years of some pretty run of the mill signings and manager. Then unleash Mancini and the step up in player. It gave them the core of Kompany etc to build an actual proper team from them
