What do you do for a living?

Recommended Posts

I work in the civil aerospace sector as an Engine Health Monitoring Engineer. I help run/maintain a system that monitors various parameters in order to track engine wear, with the goal being to keep the engine on wing for as long as possible (before removal for maintenance). Probably sounds more interesting than it actually is, but I do enjoy the technical side.

I was rubbish as a sales rep. Then I was rubbish as a teacher. Then I got ill. When I got better, it turned out I’d somehow managed to forge a role as a niche writer. No idea how that happened. People pay me twice as much as they should to do something they could do themselves. Means I get to spend afternoons dicking about with the dogs in fields or flying off to drink and eat at conferences. For some reason, these people are now paying me to talk to them too. I’d not listen to me, let alone pay me for the privilege.

Learn how to spell and punctuate, kids. The grammar nazis were right after all.

Giz a job I can do that

I manage a team of mortgage underwriters for a bank. I used to enjoy it as the teams job can be quite interesting and varied but due to Covid and other factors it’s become more and more complicated with the conditions not being the best.

Ive just passed on the opportunity to take  redundancy which I was very close to deciding on but ultimately the pay and work life balance is good and things are just too risky out there at the minute.

Two questions.

1) How 'good' are you as an accountant? I have need for a 'good' one.

2) Can you do hypnotic regression and explore any past lives? I'm absolutely convinced its b0llux but equally absolutely fascinated by it.

And seriously, kids, don't go in to insurance.

I work as a resourcing consultant for a large insurance company. I love it. Never been happier in my career.  I used to be in external recruitment which is basically selling people legally.

I won't single anyone out, as that'd be rude and mean, but some of the job roles that have been listed by the poster as enjoyable sound to me utterly dog boring.

I'm envious though. I'd like to find joy in work. I just never have. I simply prefer not working, though obvs I like the structure and money and social.life work brings. Just ambivalent to the work itself

Continuous Improvement Programme Lead for a company that handles the employability schemes for the DWP (Restart etc)

Been in the same game for years, done it at E.ON, British Gas etc etc

Quite like what i do - lots of freedom to be creative and influence people as effectively it's like being an internal consultant

20 years to retirement and counting....

I have an antique/vintage/junk shop. Enjoy it immensely even though being self employed is stressful and I have no money haha. Not sure what else I’d do. I’ve had 100 jobs since dropping out of uni and never really lasted in any of them.   X

Sounds Like alot of my very FT-posts...Antique...junk-shop...and vintage..:yesyes:

Dont think there aremany people in life who find true fulfillment  in work?

Sometimes  it's just a means to an e d.

Rhetorically  it's all well and good saying you should enjoy your work as it's a big property of your life, but in reality you just get into a slumber

A lawyer by trade. Specialise in corporate. Worked for two international firms in the city before moving to a national heavyweight.

Got fed up with the corporate red tape and started by own business a few year ago. It’s law but for a specific purpose. Absolutely love it.

Nice work mate

I think 6 Sigma belts etc have their place - i'm a firm believer in using tools or approaches situationally depending on the problems

5S can be really effective - more so in manufacturing and physical environments in my experience

I'm a CNC setter operator, some programming too. Have done milling, turning and grinding and I'm boring myself just typing this out!

I'm good at my job but I'm definitely looking to get out and do something that interests me more.

Some of you lot sound like you've done really well for yourselves :appl:

Haha - it’s strange, isn’t it.

When I tell people what a part of my job (inspecting restaurant kitchens) is, it’s a bit of a conversation stopper and/or they nod politely and glaze over…

But I really do enjoy it.

I do feel for people who are trapped in what they do, though. A couple of my peer group are trapped by money/lifestyle doing a job they hate and ticking off the years til retirement…😬

And then my neighbour is a data analyst and absolutely loves it. I can think of nothing worse, tbh.

I’ve been fortunate to never really have worked somewhere or do something that I didn’t enjoy.

So, yep, some on here do seem to have jobs that I would struggle to find interesting…but horses for courses, and all that. 👍

I absolutely don’t believe past life regression is possible, BUT have had a session in it and had a full on experience of having had a past life! Make of that what you will!
