Light up for Luke’s Law Walk – This Saturday

Β September 29, 2021Β Β IanBΒ Β Latest

Since our formation the Foxes Trust has had a policy of refusing any sponsorship or paid for advertising on our website from companies who offer any sort of gambling/betting services.

We were saddened to hear of the case of Luke Ashton, a massive Leicester City fan who took his life earlier this year as a result of his gambling disorder. Since Luke’s death, his wife Annie has tirelessly campaigned to end so-called β€˜Free Bets’, which were clearly a contributing factor in Luke’s addiction. Annie has launched a petition, called Luke’s Law #LukeslawΒ https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/587806

Annie has organised an event this weekend as she explains:

We have decided to organise a 5K walk β€˜Light Up for Luke’s Law’ *route to be confirmed* to help gain signatures on #Luke’sLaw petition as well as also give us an opportunity to raise money for the β€˜Gambling with Lives’ charity who have been an absolute life line for me and my family at this very difficult time.

The event will involve a 5K walk wearing the brightest colours (t- shirts can be purchased closer to the day, if preferred) and Glow sticks/lights/neon face paint/glitter/anything bright that will draw attention to us on our mission to raise awareness and of course gain important signatures for our petition.

The event will be held on 2nd October, which is Luke Ashton’s birthday, and will therefore be a very special day for us. We will be finishing the event with a get together at Newfoundpool Working Men’s Club to mark the occasion with a Light Up for Luke’s Law drink event. We will be requesting a small ticket donation of Β£10 (children are free) for the event where you will also receive aΒ #Luke’sLaw TShirt.

Anyone can join in with the fundraising, can walk the 5K or donate money to a gofund page which will be set up to send any money raised directly to the charity, β€˜Gambling with Lives’ on our behalf.

**The 5k walk will start Leicester Town Hall at 4pm and will involve walking passed the King Power stadium and eventually end at the venue.

Gambling with LivesΒ is a charity that was set up by loved ones of people who took their life as a direct result of gambling

A specific campaignΒ The Big StepΒ has been launched to end gambling advertising and sponsorship in football and work with clubs to reduce harms

Look at what I just recieved today. I don’t play blackjack at all.. nor have I used said bookmaker for a few month.

Effectively - If you happen to lose a grand we’ll let you have 200 quid back no worriesΒ

I’m not going to unsubscribe though as will note down and highlight these sort of things as they come through.

Bump.

Β

In watching the struggle with gambling documentary with Paul Merson on BBC One now, hopefully this type of programme can be a catalyst for viewers who are struggling themselves to try and seek professional help.

Gorging off of ill people, they Β are immoral evil people. Obscene profits with not a milligram of care about the harm they are causing.

Β

Makes me really angry and I don't even gamble.Β

I suspect that the algorithms that sit behind online casino are more sophisticated than the regulators account for... I suspect they recognise when a player is chasing losses and the odds drop...the overall pay out rate for the gameΒ  still hits 0.87 but when an addict us desperate to win back losses and ups their stake I wouldn't be surprised is that rate drops to 0.7.

Β

In other words intellectual theft of money and immeasurable damage to peopleΒ

Β

One day a game developer will get a conscience and confirm this

It's a business that exists to make profit, which is normal, except the business provides nothing positive apart from fleeting moments of ridiculous endorphin rushes. But I expect the usual platitudes will always be rolled out - you know 'nobody is forced to gamble' etc. Never ever the fault of the profiteer, unless there's a political motivation for getting them out of the way.

What really annoys me is the "When the fun stops, stop" slogan. As if it's that easy.

Just stick a gamble aware tag on your ads and wash your hands of it all.Β

the quote shows how theyr miss the point in it being an addiction - this narrative is always rejected by the gambling companies.Β  Would you say to an alcoholic - when you have had a good drink then don't have any more?Β  Any one thing it would work?

Just as a side issue - it turnsΒ  out that some people with PTSD become addicted to gambling - they enjoy the solitude and it is not triggering for their PTSD.Β  In this way they find of replace one problem with another.Β  Why don't they help ex military folk to avoid such pitfalls?

I think I said it in another thread, but I honestly think we'll look back in bewilderment at how long gambling sponsorship was allowed. Similarly to how we are with cigarettes. It wasn't that long ago that Lucky Strike and Malboro were present in F1.Β

Β

They'll be gone one day, but the lengths to which football protects them (See Kieran Trippier case) is pathetic.
