Loans 2021/22

Recommended Posts

I think he will be back in January and sent somewhere else

Steve Cotterill: Khanya Leshabela Leicester loan was a ‘punt’ for Shrewsbury Town

The South African, who turned 22 last weekend, was Cotterill’s final signing of the summer window, checking in on a season-long deal from the Premier League outfit.

But the midfielder, who was courted by Luton this summer following a trial, has played just 20 minutes of League One football since putting pen to paper on August 19.

“He’s trained very well, no different to the other lads. Against Crewe I felt it was the time to leave him out, I had him and another player and opted for the other based on fitness levels being better,” Cotterill said of Leshabela, one of his two loan signings.

“That’s not anything against him. All the other lads that have come in after the lads that did pre-season here have all suffered from some fitness issues.

“When we took Lesh in, he was going to be a punt, to a certain degree, because he hadn’t got enough football behind him where you could look at any great history.

“He’ll be part of the squad going forward and in the window we can re-assess where we might be with it.”

Leshabela has started two games for Town, in the EFL Cup and EFL Trophy.

Cotterill feels that youngsters in the top flight face a difficult battle to ignite their careers due to the depth of quality and finances around Premier League clubs.

He added: “I think it is (hard). What sometimes happens when they come down to League One from some Premier League clubs, those Premier League clubs will have 20 players like Lesh, who don’t perhaps get the opportunity to play in the first team, there’s so much money swilling around the Premier League, those players can end up staying for three, four, five years and never play.

“It’s a bit of a problem we have in our game. Anyone who shows any sign of talent from even younger than 16 will get snapped up, and then they never get to their full potential, because they get sucked up by the Premier League and never play games.

“The best thing you can ever do with young players – and they’ve got to be good enough – is to give them game time, that’s where they will learn more than anything.”

The Academy should be for U21s with a limit on the number of U23s, for those that have been injured etc.  Anyone over that age if good enough should be considered part of the 1st Team squad if not they'd be better off in the lower leagues or non-league football.

I know this will be tough for those over 21 but that's the reality of where most of them will end up anyway.

He makes a good point that players need game time at senior level to improve and I do think the bigger clubs harvest too many players in the hope they find a gem. I suppose if you’re good enough amongst the guys plucked then you should be good enough to make a career in the pro game at a decent level.

We should build relationships with teams from the lower leagues, like non-league north/south and national and loan out youngsters there. I think if the youngster can perform at that level it’ll do them the world of good and higher league clubs maybe interested to following seasons.

Does really show the U23 game is next to useless in terms of getting players ready for senior football.

I think we actually had a pretty good summer in terms of getting rid of the older players we had stuck around - either let go / sold / loaned

Only player over 21 we still have now is Eppiah (22)

Average age against Everton was 19.45, and that was pulled up a bit by Benkovic (24) and the oldest player after that was Suengchitthawon (21) who I think may have gone out on loan if he hadn't got that injury

Good but let's see what happens when the current ones get to 21+ will we be back with a squad full of over 21s?

Really gutted for Callum Wright, he seemed destined to have a great season and then possibly make the next step in to the Championship.

Ah man that's disappointing for the lad, like you say he seemed to be taking each step up in his stride, similar to Harvey and KDH.

Hopefully he can recover fully and pick up where he left off at the back end of the season.

....you would think the quality of training they would be getting in a Premier League club would see them above the ability of League one clubs!!!

Our U23s go out on loan and are struggling to excel in lower leagues and that is quite a sad indictment, having come through the system since 8 years old. Are we failing these players or are the players letting themselves down.

If the reason is not the training they have been given, then it has to be the ability to go out and play in competitive games, in order to mature and hone their skills. At present we play in a league for their appropriate ages and unless you are special, the elevation to a higher and a more mature competition does not manifest itself.

What if we were to take Braybrooke, and play him in League two or even higher, would that accelerate his development or is that going to be too much too soon. We should not be sending players from our academy out there into lower leagues and finding that they can't compete, that is a poor reflection on our coaching and failure to instil a confidence that they can take with them knowing that they have come through a school of excellence and only their lack of application holds them back.

It'll be a massive culture change even more so with Seagrave, plus you've got players whose livelihood depends on them getting a new contract every so often. I suspect it's pretty cut throat by comparison and some regulars wont be too happy with some 'kid' looking to oust them.

Horrible news about Callum. He was the most exciting loan for me this year (well, there's Iversen maybe). I'm disappointed Leshabela's loan doesn't seem to be working out. He seemed a tidy player in the u23s and Luton wanted to buy him. I feel like he's been a little unlucky with his loan. Hopefully Shade and continue the good form.

Yeah as far as loans are concerned, there's barely any worth bothering to keep an interest in. Last season was great with KDH and Sowah.

Yeah. I know Maswanhise is only 18 but a loan come Jan would be good. Baybrooke sounds like he's doing well enough for a loan. But, again, young and in this case might struggle physically at his age.

No way Baybrooke goes out on loan. He's already playing football at a standard to improve him. Keep him here.

I’m thinking about next season really. Unless he’s bossing it come Jan. I believe he’s had some England call-ups. It shouldn’t be too hard to get him a loan once he’s physically strong enough. I’m slightly worried about the post above talking about him renewing his contract soon.
