To be fair I don’t imagine wilfs stats hugely differ from Kantes when it comes to defensive cover

True most likely.

The point here is, replacing a Ferrari with a Moped is not really going to help our cause.  We need to find a more suitable stop-gap solution whilst Little Wes is out of commission.    Lack of pace gets murdered in the EPL unless you play a very deep block.

Seem to remember West Brom saying similar things about Evans. It's hard for defenders playing in shite teams.

Surely not? It was always the general consensus that he was one of the best cbs outside the super league clubs...

I remember them saying he was great and then struggled in the last 6 months or something. Out side their club though, he was absolutely regarded as one of the best CBs. Linked to Arsenal and even to Man City at one stage

I think West Brom fans wanted rid of Evans due to the whole taxi thing and supposedly "downing tools" whilst being captain

Don´t rate him at all. Apart from his height Vestergaard is prone to making stupid mistakes and costing goals. He is slow and would not fit our playing style.

Evans is slow.

Vestergaard loves to play out from the back.

I would prefer better but if you consider Evans is due back in 1 month and long-term we have Fofana back too, this is not bad for a 4th choice CB.

He also dramatically improves one of our key weaknesses. Defending set plays and scoring from them.

Problem is we don't have money for a Ferrari at the moment.

Evans is quicker than people think

He certainly isn't quite like Fofana or Cags though

It also massively helps that he is a brilliant reader of the game, and Jonny is usually already moving into position to defend/intercept or whatever before the attacker has a chance to get going or get onto a ball

Can people stop saying he's slow, Jonny Evans is bloody slow and we're all happy with him.

Yes agree Evans is slow but he seems to have a positional awareness and controls the defensive line. Vestergaard does not. In the Danish national team he is 2nd string to Kjær and if he is to replace Evans he doesn´t have what it takes. And Im not sure he´d come here to be 4th solution when he plays regularly at Southampton. But yes - his strength his heading ability.

Probably unfair to Kjær really, he is national captain and starting centre back at AC Milan, still a very good player.

What Kjær does for Denmark and AC Milan is probably the equivalent of Jonny for us.

If it's a funky moped we'll be ok.

We miss those speed demons Morgan and Huth!

Tbf we played a very different system with those two. No nonsense ready to counter. We have so much of the ball under Rodgers that someone cocking it up (Perez lol) creates a turnover that we then need to defend quickly.

Im still not over it clearly because with Fofana and Soy we could get everyone up on at least half way and suffocate teams in their own half without too much fear of turnover. Simply by losing little Wes we’ll have to change that up for the season start.

They never needed to be. We always sat deep and countered when that was our pairing. They’d be run ragged in a Rodgers side because we play so much higher up.

I don’t think pace is the be all and end all for a centre back (quite the opposite, generally speaking) but it’s certainly a factor playing the way that we do. It gets exposed fairly frequently even with our quicker defenders available.

Only time Ive seen pace being an issue is when we've played a high line and the opposition plays a long ball over the top of every one which usually means our back 2 defenders get caught in a sprinting match against a striker much faster than them. If Kasper reads it he sprints out and saves us otherwise we're in deep doo doo.

Which is every game almost besides when we play the traditional big 6.

Most of the mid to lower table sides all play defensively and try to counter us whilst we spend most the game passing sideways trying to find a way through. I think in these games he would struggle

Maguire is probably the slowest defender around but still lauded as one of the best in the league.

I think we would cope fine. We already do with Evans.
