Leicester City players given international green light after initial Premier League refusal
Caglar Soyuncu and Patson Daka will be able to represent their countries this international break, but not in all of their matches amid rules around coronvarius restrictions

Leicester City’s international players will be able to play some of their nation’s fixtures this international break amid the risk of missing Premier League games.

The Premier League and its 20 clubs, including City, initially ruled players out from representing their countries if they were on the UK’s red list.

No exemptions have been afforded to players, and so upon returning from red-list countries, they would have to isolate for 10 days in the UK, missing three fixtures, two in the Premier League and one in the Europa League.

Turkey’s Caglar Soyuncu and Zambia’s Patson Daka were both affected, as their countries are on the red list, but so too were Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, and Ghana’s Daniel Amartey, as they had away games in red-list countries.

After much debate, a decision was finally reached that players could feature for their countries in matches as long as they did not go to red-list countries.

Some players have defied those rules though, including Aston Villa's Argentinian duo Emiliano Martinez and Emi Buendia, and so will have to isolate on their return.

So while Soyuncu missed Wednesday’s game between Turkey and Montenegro in Istanbul, he will be able to play in the World Cup qualifiers against Netherlands and Gibraltar.

That’s also true for Daka, who can play in Zambia’s trip to Mauritania on Friday, but not in their home game against Tunisia next week.

Iheanacho, Ndidi, and Amartey will all be able to play in the countries’ home fixtures.

The quintet affected by the coronavirus restrictions are five of 11 senior players City have on international duty.

Belgian duo Youri Tielemans and Timothy Castagne are part of Roberto Martinez’s squad, Papy Mendy, despite not featuring for City this season, is in the Senegal team, while goalkeepers Danny Ward and Kasper Schmeichel played for Wales and Denmark respectively on Wednesday night.

Left-back Luke Thomas has been included in the England Under-21 squad for the first time.

Three more players were called up for their countries, but Ricardo Pereira, Jonny Evans, and Jannik Vestergaard all had to pull out through injury.

Despite initial trepidation amid the coronavirus restrictions, saying City needed to protect themselves as a club, manager Brendan Rodgers has now said that he is pleased his players will be able to build their fitness playing for their countries, while he trains with those staying at home.

“I’ll be happy for the boys to go away on international duty because then they can play some games and add to their fitness,” he said.

“It’s always difficult, these first three to five games, you’re still searching (for fitness). If you look at the likes of Harvey (Barnes), he’s still getting up to speed fitness-wise, and one or two of the other lads as well.

“The boys will work hard, the guys that stay, they’ll have a few days off but then we’ll be really excited about the month that comes after it.”

Do you think he'll make it to 100 caps? On 72 at present.

Barring injury, I would say for sure. There is no competition at the moment, he is streets ahead of the other goalkeepers. With so many international games per year, I think he can easily achieve it.

Yeah, was wondering about the next in line and how close they are. If he's fit he could easily play for another two tournaments.

Luke Thomas concern as Leicester City international has game cancelled

City will hope the left-back is unaffected by the outbreak with the club already short of defenders as they prepare for the visit of reigning champions Manchester City

Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas has been denied a chance to make his England under-21 debut this week after positive Covid-19 cases in the Young Lions camp.

Thomas and the rest of the squad were due to travel to Romania for a friendly encounter on Friday, but two Covid positives have seen the trip cancelled.

Called up to the under-21 squad for the first time, Thomas would have been looking ahead to representing his country in the age group after playing for the under-18s, under-19s and under-20s.

It is not known who among the playing squad and coaching staff has contracted Covid, but they are isolating from the rest of the group at St George’s Park, the FA have said, while preparations now turn to the 2023 European Championships qualifier against Kosovo in Milton Keynes on Tuesday.

City will hope Thomas is unaffected by the positive Covid cases and remains so, as they are already short of defenders.

Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana, Jannik Vestergaard, Ryan Bertrand and James Justin all missed the win over Norwich last time out, while Ricardo Pereira came off with a hamstring issue.

If he is fine, Thomas could still make his debut on Tuesday. But no matter whether he features, he should be learning plenty away with the group as England’s most-capped full-back, Ashley Cole, is the new assistant manager for the under-21s, working alongside Lee Carsley, who was promoted to the manager’s role in the summer.

On Wednesday night, City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel played 90 minutes as Denmark kept up their perfect record in World CUp qualifying with a 2-0 win over Scotland.

Danny Ward also kept a clean sheet, playing as captain for the first 45 minutes of Wales’ friendly with Finland, which ended goalless.

On Thursday night, Youri Tielemans and Timothy Castagne could be in action for Belgium as they travel to Estonia.

I understand World Cup qualifiers. I even understand money for friendlies. I don't understand sending players to youth friendlies during a pandemic.
