City's Europa League campaign kicks off at home to the Italian side next week, but with players unable to feature, one of Naples' top health officials says questions need answering

One of Naples’ top health officials has questioned whether the Europa League tie between Leicester City and Napoli should go ahead next week.

Antonio D’Amore, director of health authority ASL Napoli 2 Nord, has said there are question marks over next Thursday’s fixture at the King Power Stadium given the UK government’s coronavirus restrictions.

As things stand, Napoli are likely to have several players unavailable for the game – including goalkeeper David Ospina and striker Victor Osimhen – as after representing their countries in red-list territories over the international break, they would be required to isolate for 10 days upon arrival in the UK, even though they will return to amber-list Italy first.

It is an issue that has hit Premier League clubs, who have banned players from travelling to red-list countries with their international teams with the government not granting exemptions to footballers.

At City, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Patson Daka, Daniel Amartey, and Caglar Soyuncu have all been affected by the issue, and have been unable to play in all of their nation’s fixtures.

Last season, when Napoli had two players test positive for Covid-19, they acted on the guidance of the local health authority and did not travel to Turin for a Serie A game with Juventus.

The game was not abandoned, with Serie A rejecting the health authority’s guidance, and so the Juventus squad turned up but with no opponent to play.

Napoli were initially given a 3-0 defeat and deducted a point, but that was later overturned when the game was eventually played six months later.

Speaking this week, D’Amore told Radio Punto Nuovo: “There are various Napoli players who have to return from the red zones, and according to the English protocol they could not play. Will Leicester-Napoli be suspended?

“This is not a question you should ask me but the British authorities. I think all players are vaccinated and when they come back from the red zones the workers' protocol must be applied.

“Our behavior was correct on the Juve-Napoli case: we never regretted it.

“There must be more attention, we are coming out of a season in which it was played behind closed doors and seeing the Switzerland-Italy game where fans were without a mask is a very serious matter.”

This week, Uefa lifted restrictions on away fans attending Europa League games, with decisions on whether supporters can be granted entry now made by authorities in each country.

.. is it much different from playing in European matches!!!

There was a time most of Europe was on England's "red list".

Less severe yes, with European competition there is no cross-continent travel and most countries in the EU are way ahead with their vaccination programs than for example African nations. That time has also passed, in the present time Europe is far safer and less restrictive from a quarantine point of view than any other region on the planet virtually.

Their problem, should have planned ahead and not released players for international duty that were going to cause an issue.

You've said what I was going to say. They knew the fixture list, it's up to them to plan around it and make the necessary decisions. The blokes probably a Napoli fan lol

No real difference to intercontinental competitions really, especially with away fans allowed.

Clubs based in red list countries playing in the European competitions will be a problem, the rest will be fine player wise.

All this makes me think that AFCON if it goes ahead in January could end up an absolute shitshow in terms of how long players could be unavailable for.

...what if clubs refuse to release players under the guise of the protection of the player!!!

You could argue that bringing a player into that environment could be seen as detrimental to their health and well being.

International football should be knocked on the head for a while, it's just causing chaos.

Scrap it completely!

Well, scrap qualifiers, anyway. They’re boring, and more trouble than they’re worth. Just pick teams out of a hat to play in the world cup and the euros. Then we can have our football seasons back without stupid breaks.

Either that or just go back to having the internationals on a Wednesday night with a normal football weekend either side.

Absolutely do not understand why this country with a quarter of a million positive cases every week is not on everybody's red list. Health transcends football every single time.

When has anything made sense in this last year haha

If the shoe was on the other foot, would Napoli  call it off if we asked? No, **** em, don’t let the fans travel and let us paste them.

In all honesty I really feel for the authorities for this one…..  it’s going to kick off.
