Transfer Target IN - Jesse Lingard

Narh, sorry but he's another Demarai Gray. Being shit for years at United is the real trend here, not a small purple patch on loan at a new club.

I found a lot of the goals he scored at West Ham baffling, players just kept dropping off him and allowing him to just walk through uncontested and tap in.

Buying him after one brief loan stint at West Ham would be like jumping on a player who's just had a good summer tournament with no consideration to previous track record.

He's 28, he's also a complete muppet, he'd want tidy wages and he'd waste a squad position that could go to a talented young prospect we could build up and sell for profit, given we'd only ever make a loss on Lingard.

He'd also be tested here in a way he wasn't at West Ham but he has been and failed at United and that's being actually creative. West Ham are and were terrible at breaking teams down that park the bus, they've leaned hard and heavy in to counter attacking. Lingard would probably have been excellent in our title winning season doing the Shinji job centrally behind a striker, counter attacking and linking up the play with his energy.

But in a passing 4231, played as a wide player or as an attacking midfielder in a team that's trying to break down a stubborn opposition? Think you need to go and talk to redcafe about that because I highly doubt they're full of ringing praise. Hard working grafter, yes, creative play maker no.

We should be looking for better on the wings (I mean he straight up isn't a winger) and we already have better centrally.

I agree with almost all of this. He's not technical enough to suit our style of play. He's good as the X factor in a kick and rush team but he'll be hugely frustrating here as moves break down when the ball comes to him when we're trying to score the perfect goal against a packed defence.

If our fan base hate Maddison so badly then Lingard doesn't stand a chance.

I'm sure they're the same stats wise in the PL and Maddison has a fair few games on Lingard too.

He had 8 good games last season and he's the second coming of christ.

No.

He’s a player that I’ve never rated stemming back from his loan with us… that being said I do feel he’d do a job for us  at the minute we have next to no real competition for Madders meaning pretty much regardless of his non existent form we’ve seen for around a year he’ll still be picked week in week out! I do feel with some1 like lingard we’d see the best of both him and Madders plus Lingard seems more than capable of playing out wide which gives us decent options… would also mean he wouldn’t be bagging against us every time we play him lol

No.

...remember the goal he scored in the charity shield against us!!!

He can beat a man with skill and quick enough to play behind or around the striker.

Sometimes you need to come out of your comfort zone and go elsewhere to be the player you should be. Stopping at United you are constrained by how you are perceived within that environment and like a family it is hard to express yourself in a way that is different from what they have previously known.

God man, all this love-in for Lingard from you guys. He doesn't really want to go anywhere but stay at Man U, he didn't make a big fuss about wanting to to join WHU permanently or he would have put in a transfer request. I think the loan at WHU was all about him, he wanted to get back playing on the pitch with the Man U team and get back in the England Squad else why else didn't he go to WHU with a manager in Moyes who he enjoyed working with. Why isn't he as great when he plays for Man U compared to his loan spell, can anyone tell me? His goals and assists at WHU were on the counterattack, will Brendan allow Leicester to play fast pacey football or does he want us to play creative technical football which isn't suited to Lingards ability.

....I do believe that has been Rodgers main gripe, that we need to move the ball quicker and speed up our play!!!

I mean, not really Bert no.

Not the way Rodgers is determined for us to play, anyway. He suits the way the fans wish we played and that's something fairly different. We only really play counter attacking football a couple of times a year against the biggest clubs in the league.

He proved at West Ham he's a great fit in a team that's going to specialise in broken field play on the counter, he links up the attack and defence well, he carries the ball fairly well, he's got bags of energy and he's hard working, nobody can fault that.

But if you want to get the ball down, pass it around and break down a side - which is Rodgers whole MO - he's pretty much shit.

No it isn't. He's suited to counter attacking and playing in space. We don't need strenghening on that front with Vardy, Barnes and Daka.

He's not the sort of technical wizard to keep the ball moving quickly when faced with two banks of four as we usually seem to be these days.

Edit just read @Finnegans post who makes this same point more articulately.
