LCFC vs Villa (A) Post Match Thread 2 - 1

Some things are very very clear; and actually probably agreed on by 90% of readers, I would think:

1) We are absolutely rancid.

2) We are mentally incredibly weak.

3) Some players just don't fancy it (and keep getting picked)

4) BR doesn't know how to solve the set piece defending issue and clearly has not, will not (?) reach out for the right specialist help (which surely looks like ' go and attack and win the ball ' whether its zonal or man2man, you just have to go and win that first ball).

5) We aren't as canny and sly as some teams.

This is the big one for me. Villa are like this every time we play them, yet we (and the refs) fall for it every time. Should be getting in the refs face, accusing them of diving, and when Cash lunges in on our players (which he does constantly) it should be time to roll around on the floor clutching ankles just like they do. If they want a game of soft free kicks, make it one where they get given both ways, not a ridiculous one sided 25-8 affair like today - means we can't compete, they get to tackle as they please, whereas every time we win a ball it's a free kick to them and we're back under pressure.

The thing is that it's not really funny at all anymore when SKY commentators are picking up on things our 5 million a year manager seems to be blind to. They were joking that a corner is like a penalty which it was, and joking that Lookman just gives it away every time in the 1st half, yet still wanders out for the 2nd half. It's getting stupid now just how shit we are every week at the same things. And what were those subs??? Brings Vardy on who didn't touch the ball, when Daka was one of our best players, then puts Daka on the wing then takes him off then brings Kel's on just about half an hour too late.

Kasper was dreadful but so were many others.

I thought it was 10 million a year!

Let’s bin this season off, I’ve resigned myself to the fact we will finish 11th-15th. First real poor season for a few years. Standards have dropped and I’m willing to give Rodgers the summer to rebuild and go again. Hopefully having Fofana and Justin playing regularly next season will give us more defensive solidity.

Big summer ahead for Rodgers and the recruitment team. I’d like to see a new full back (preferably LB), central midfielder to unfortunately replace Tielemans and a right sided winger.

Would seriously listen to any offers for our players other than Evans, Castagne, Justin, Fofana, Ndidi, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy, Daka

I found the Daka change especially strange. Caused no end of problems first half. Ok I get Vardy has a goal in him, but it was very early to make that change. Feels like it pre-planned…again.

Maybe they learnt from watching him. But it was pretty noticeable. That said, doesn't help that Lookman continually barges into the back of people.

Lookman certainly had an off day.  It took just 15 minutes to realise he was a total liability, but 65 for Rodgers to replace him, with a choice of Vardy, Albrighton, Peter or Iheancho at his disposal.  How can he be so unreactive? The game was well lost by then.

Given that we are so absolutely terrible at defenders corners; why are we so happy to give them away? We give away some of the most avoidable corners of any side I've watched; often when under zero pressure.

So true.  And free kicks even more so.

Started brightly for once but as soon as we give set pieces away in our own half there’s almost a sense of inevitability that at the very least we’re going to give away a decent goal scoring opportunity. If that’s what we experience as fans I see no reason why the players wouldn’t feel it too, so it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy…

Still, after the equaliser we continued to get into some great attacking positions, we were just far too passive or made the wrong decision. The less said about the second half the better and I can only agree with much of what has already been said. I can’t remember the last time one of our full backs got the byline… villa didn’t really create anything through ingenuity, our school boy defending and lack of composure continued to gift wrap them chances.

I’m afraid it’s becoming a bit of a chore to watch us at the minute, which is such a shame as we all know the potential of this team. Feels like the season could all hinge on Thursday….

Rodgers I think definitely has two problems in his game that unfortunately will be his undoing at most clubs.

1) he is infuriatingly stubborn and seemingly won’t deviate away from his philosophy.

2) as good as his teams can be, they usually are very soft, and on occasion can be bullied out of games.

Everyone remembers the debacle at Palace when he was Liverpool manager, I just think Rodgers unlike managers like Klopp and Pep, wants to make his teams as refined and as technical as possible, when managers like those mentioned also like to get some grit in as well…

We just don’t seem to have that, when we are playing well it’s all fine and dandy, but when we are poor, we are absolutely awful, and usually extremely easy to beat.

He's had an off month or more. Just not of the required level. But then we kind of knew that before he signed. Again, his signing seemed a last minute panic buy.

We need someone in midfield that isn’t afraid to get stuck and get in anyone that isn’t putting a shift in just to give the others a lift around them if it isn’t working.so easy to play through at the minute

Someone like McGinn.  Wasn't it rumoured that we were interested in signing him before he went to Viila?

How is it incompatible when we spent 99% of the last two seasons in the top 4. That would suggest they're clearly compatible.

More than anything it feels like this unknown problem none of us here really understand the root of. There's defensive issues, but why aren't they even partially being adressed? Is that BR? Is that the players? Do we have sports psychologists? Zonal doesn't work, why aren't the defensive coaches either changing it or fixing it? They're clearly doing something to fix it, but why isn't it working? Has losing out on top 4 got into players heads?

People make more out of it than probably needed and I get why after a loss. In the pre-season once Fofana was out for the season, JJ was injured for most if it and Evans had issues this was on the wall. I didn't expect us to compete to the same standard we had and felt top 6 would be really lucky. But the frustrating part is watching us repeat the same mistakes. I'd take cutting the mistakes for a 0-0 draw at this point. And where's Armarty? Is he injured?

do you not think that we pressed a lot more those two seasons? Zipped our passes around a lot more those two seasons? Vardy, as great as he is, IS slowing down and he’s a key part of how we played. If he’s aging, if we have players out injured and if it just isn’t working with what we have then it’s time to change things up isn’t it?

it’s not hard to understand surely…

If we finish 11-15th many of our better players might think that’s the end of the ride, and jump off.

It’s the basics that we are getting wrong and we are getting them wildly wrong.

Our attacking players must be fuming because in the first half we pressed well and looked a real threat, but then the defence craps its pants again and it all comes tumbling down.

Under Rodgers we’ve always looked weak, lacked aggression, lacked mental resilience and struggled to defend set pieces. They aren’t new problems, but this season they are noticeably worse.

I just can’t see him resolving them. If he could, why hasn’t he by now? We may limp on a bit longer but ultimately it feels like those issues will get him eventually.

this is a very good point. If we want to keep our best players, or at least get top dollar for them, we have GOT to rescue our season.

That moment where we had a corner and the ball ended up in our box with some calamitous defending and then Villa being equally as poor making the most of the chance and then again is giving it away and then villa being shite again summed us up today. Just a comedy show and quite embarrassing.
