Who do you want January 2022

Sorry I called it yesterday. Given our injuries, and general shitness, at CB, we'd have done the business by now.

Not sure if FFP counts again this year given covid, didn't they waive it recently because of it? Regardless, our owners (for all the wonderful things they have done) need to spend, if we fall foul of FFP I don't care - I guarantee other clubs are not following FFP right now.

FFP is a myth, plenty of teams do try and adhere to it though and we do because of our past problems with the EFL and don't want to give any reason for more trouble. That's my opinion anyway, I may well be wrong.

I still think our recruitment team has got PTSD from the Bennett panic  signing. Have we signed anyone in January since? That said I still think he's 5x the footballer of Vestergaard.

At least we've been shit all season this year so hard to blame failing to strengthen in January for a end of season capitulation :dunno:

We're not signing anyone this window.

I went into this month believing that but found myself starting to think otherwise after freeing up a space by Benkovic' departure but now with Amartey coming back, Fofana not too far away and tweedle dumb and tweedle dee (Soyuncu and Vestergaard) being fit, I just don't see it.

More than anything I want players coming in that suit the system and formation we play. I think in the summer they need to sit down and work out exactly how they want to set up next season whether that be a 4-2-3-1 or a back 3 and actually recruit players that are specialists in those positions.

It’s looking more and more likely that a fairly big summer rebuild is on the cards with the contracts of Tielemans, Soyuncu, Ricardo, Perez, Bertrand all expiring in 2023, and I’d get rid of the above as either not wanting to be here, too injury prone or because they are crap.

Gutted if true on the CB situation. We just need a steady head with a bit of experience. They won't ride it out with Soy and Vesty for another few months.

Big Wes to come out of retirement for a few months? Even at the age of 37 he can't be any worse than Vestergaard surely.

We also tried for Malang Sarr on loan but Chelsea turned us down

If that’s the case, I’m not surprised Rodgers said what he said last night.

For the type of player that Rodgers was looking for, Colwill, Sarr and Gomez of Liverpool all fit the bill, we got knocked back on two, while Liverpool have said Gomez won’t be leaving on loan.

Apart from those three, there’s nobody out there who’d fit the bill at this precise moment.

So they are the only 3 defenders you can think of that would fit our profile? Don't be silly, there's plenty of others. Let's have a look come the 1st February on who moved in this window who would have fit our profile, there'll be a handful.

I think the Defensive performance against Liverpool might have given the club a false sense of security. To be honest we could have been 3 or 4 down by half time yesterday so if we don't add anyone I think we could really struggle - at least we had Evans to steady the ship for most of the first half of the season.

We have never been more desperate for Centre Backs. Yes January is a tough window but no real links. CB issue hasn’t just hit us, we have been without Fofana and Evans (bar a few games this season) since the middle of last year..

To hear no one will be coming in, even on loan , is astounding. Maybe it’s due to our position in the league as we are pretty much making the numbers up this season and we have settled for that.

The summer is going to be a tough window for us.. 2/3 will be wanting to leave for regular European football..

take your pick from Youri who we know is going…. Maddison, Barnes, Ndidi..

Ricardo who will only have a year left..

we have reached our peak obviously with the PL winning season and the last two years by finishing 5th (bottling 4th both times) I fear mid table going nowhere for a few years..

At this moment in time, yes. Highly unlikely we’ll spend on someone like Botman or Szalai, two players who’ve been linked with Prem moves.

The only loan moves we’ve had links with, have been British based players. Maybe dipping into the foreign market for someone like Lenglet or Zagadou, is too much of a gamble for them :dunno:

Who else is there realistically?

Nat Phillips, Joe Rodon, Phil Jones.

For the type of player Rodgers said he wanted, I’d rather pass on the three names above.

Phil Jones would be ideal until the end of the season in my opinion.

Tanner suggested in his article that we enquired about him but decided to not take it any further as were concerned about how he'd fit with our playing style (high line, proactive press etc.).

Looks like the lessons from the Vestergaard fiasco have been learned.

Does Rodgers have an argument that the owners need to back him a little more?

I don’t expect us to bring one in January but we desperately need a starting centre back. To partner Fofana when he’s back, with Soyuncu, Evans and Amartey as backups.

.. it will happen  in the summer!!!

Aw man...I'd have loved him here. He did play against Brighton in the league the other day though, so maybe no surprise Chelsea said no.

Phillips would probably do well here, he's no nonsense with a touch of skill and composure. Rodon is a curious one as he fits the exact player who we'd have gone for from Swansea a few years ago and he's great on the ball, relatively quick and a Rodgers type high line defender. Not completely assured he's good enough but at this stage he'd certainly be someone I'd rather we have than didn't have anyone.

Jones would probably get injured here within weeks.

I feel like FFP has been changing… like, if there was a loop hole before, clubs would exploit it ( including us) so they’d close that hole.  So clubs are constantly looking to bend ( not break) the rules so they seem to be updating the process every year.

It's not stopped Man City spending literally a billion quid under Pep, the whole thing is a token measure and verging on a scam. It was designed to stop exactly the sort of thing City are doing yet they continue to get away with and it's lesser European sides in Turkey etc that end up getting slapped with bans.
