Analyst Hugo Klein, the founder of Macro-Football, has developed a piece of software - called the Player Replacement Shortlist Generator - to find players capable of replacing those similar to them at other clubs.

Each player is given a percentage score of how similar they are to the player they could replace.

We had a look for defenders Leicester could sign on loan this month.

The general consensus is that Leicester City need to sign a central defender on loan this month.

Wesley Fofana, Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu are all out injured, leaving Jannik Vestergaard as the only fit and available senior centre-back.

Rodgers has commented that "money doesn't grow on trees" heading into the transfer window, but did say loans are an option open to him this month.

Andreas Christensen, Chelsea

Player similarity to Soyuncu: 97%

Christensen has been linked with a move to Barcelona, but that could be one for the summer.

The Dane has only made 13 appearances in the Premier League this season under Thomas Tuchel and could benefit from more football.

He already knows Kasper Schmeichel and Jannik Vestergaard from the Denmark national team and is versatile enough to play in central midfield if needed.

James Tomkins, Crystal Palace

Player similarity to Evans: 99%

He is not one of the first names to come to mind, but Tomkins could be a similar signing to that of Ryan Bennett in January 2020.

The 32-year-old has been with Palace since 2016 and has only played eight games under the leadership of Patrick Vieira this season.

Tomkins is an astute defender and has spent 16 of the last 17 seasons playing in the Premier League.

Jonathan Gradit, RC Lens

Player similarity to Fofana: 99%

Gradit, 29, plies his trade with RC Lens in Ligue 1.

Standing at 6ft 2in, he has a 99% score for his similarity to fellow Frenchman Wesley Fofana.

Fofana's traits are exactly what Leicester have been missing this season, while his experience in the top flight of French football will make the transition to the Premier League smoother.

Jordan Beyer, Borussia Monchengladbach

Player similarity to Fofana: 98%

Beyer is a Germany under-21 international who plays for Gladbach but has spent time on loan at Hamburg SV.

Like Gradit, he is incredibly similar to Fofana and, at the age of 21, very much has youth on his side.

He is not a regular for Gladbach and could prove useful for Leicester as they find themselves in a desperate situation.

Ah yes because what we need right now is another loan like that one that went so well…

Wish we'd have loaned Vestergaard.

As we have 25 in the squad and Mendy not even in it If we bring anyone in we've got to lose someone and we've seen how hard it is to sell fringe players we will probably end up leaving Benkovic out of the squad. I think we would have done this at the beginning of the season but thought Mendy was going. I then think with Benkovic's space in the squad we will loan in a CB but hopefully a young one with an option to buy.

Maybe try using it for Rudiger or anyone else who can defend a corner lol

I’d take Christensen. Feel like we need someone who has prem experience so they can just slot right in.

I'm sure you would

However the talk is he wants 4 years on 140k a week at Chelsea.

The only reason he hasn't resigned for Chelsea is because he looking for someone to pay him more.

We will not be matching that.

I know the Mercury is bad, but this writer going to some dubious website, plugging in names and numbers, then writing an article about four results from the site as transfer news, and the editors actually writing a headline saying “Brendan Rodgers given four-man shortlist” is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen in transfer window silly season.

Everybody that had a hand in that article ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I don't think the people who produce the Mercury will be capable of feeling any shame

We thought that about JV and RB

Christensen is no Vestergaard though. Chelsea want to keep him and it's only that he wants a huge contract that he may even be available. Southampton couldn't believe their luck when we signed JV. RB was a free transfer squad player and wouldn't have played as much as he has had we had so many injuries.

Has anyone ever heard that Ray Parlour story of Kolo Toure's trial at Arsenal where he two footed Henry, then Bergkamp and then Arsene Wenger in his first session? It's on youtube and might explain why we are getting so many injured defenders if he is training them :)

It must have been an exciting day for all the interns at the Merc and the rest of Reach PLC, when they discovered that guy had literally created a clickbait generator, and they no longer had to do the time consuming google search or browsing of twitter before they get on to the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V part of pasting the details into the usual template they use when "writing" their transfer "news".
