I heard this term used occasionally throughout my career, and sometimes, I believe incorrectly, as a noun.

 

I don't think anyone could be expected to guess an acronym as a 'word' on Wordle, I can only think that the setter wasn't aware of its use as such.  

I imagine it's computer generated.

Initially it wasn't Josh Wardle compiled the list of common 5 letter words and reviewed them with his GF. When the New York Times bought it it already had his predefined list built into the code and they changed a few because they thought they were too obscure. This lead to some people having different words because they hadn't cleared the cache and were still working off the original list not the updated NY times list.

 

I'm not sure whether they are still working through his original list now.
