Focus should be on the Europa Conference League

Recommended Posts

I know the Premier League is what every manager focuses on, trying to either survive or get a top 4 or top 6 slot.

Realistically, I feel we will survive, but not get top 6.  A top 10 finish would be good considering our injuries this season and our inconsistency.

Therefore shouldn’t we focus our efforts on the Europa Conference League?  Win that and you’re in the Europa League next season, which is a route in as we most probably won’t get top 6. Winning the FA cup has the same end product, but I reckon there are tougher teams left in the FA cup compared to the Europa Conference.

Therefore in my opinion, Rodger’s should focus on the Europa Conference league?  What do people reckon?

All true but he'll rest vardy for the final because we'll be playing an already relegated Watford the week after, ie what he did against madrid with Gerrard

I'll preface this by saying that I want us to put our focus in the FA Cup and Europa Conference League but at the same time the club needs money to pay for things like the Stadium redevelopment and the Training Ground.

All well and good saying that we should prioritise cup competitions but at the same time we're currently unable to afford a centre back this january which is leading to us continuing to play Vestergaard and Soyuncu who have been nothing but shambolic this season.

On prize money alone, we've earned £5.6m from Europe so far.

Winning the Conference League would bring in an additional £11.6m.

Looking at PL alone at prize-money from an article I saw with the Mirror:-

7th is £27million and 13th is £15million.

It's the TV money what makes the difference in the PL but that's dictated by how many times you are shown. There's an initial payment and then after ten televised games, you get additional payments. Therefore if you are in that glut of mid-table and decrease your chance of being televised, there's not a lot in it.

Not sure those figures are correct.

Last season we won about £140m in Premier League prize money.

Look at the variable though, which is 'merit share' - the numbers therefore tie in with what Cardiff fox is saying, which is easily recouped through winning the bobstain league cup

After the winter break we'll have players back so we should be in a better position to rotate then.

Beating Forest then what you put...

I did say prize money solely which is the merit share column - that’s mostly TV money which we are getting anyway. Only difference is the ‘facilities fee’ which applies after you’ve been in ten televised games and this badly skewed towards the bigger clubs

Hey, league 1 is a booby prize for teams that screwed up the championship. Ditto championship for PL failures. I love them both on my CV

I just love silverware!. I could bathe in it

Not true.

£2m per league position roughly, and we're likely to finish anywhere between 14th-8th at a guess. So focussing on the league would net us a max uplift of about £12m (probably less), but we'd also be without European football next season.

If I've understood correctly, winning the conference league (which should be within our capability) will net us another £12m this season (see tweet below) and is our best chance to qualify for next season's Europa League, which then adds another £3.5m participation fee and potential to win more.

The Europa Conference League should be our priority from a financial point of view, and getting into Europe will massively help us with signing/keeping players next season.

I bow to your superior knowledge .Even more reason to go for it then

I don't give a flying walrus about prize money, I want our name etched into silver.

I've been to Albania, twice, I'd love a third trip to see a trophy held up.

Brilliant country, brilliant people, even better in the summer.

COME ON!!

I’d love us to win this but again it won’t be easy I think some think we’ll walk this personally I can’t see it, it will still be tough. Be nice to have our name on the trophy first and its away of getting European football next season even though next season I believe we’ll finish in the top 6.

In a perfect world yes, but this is far from perfect and footballers are all human. Do you have the same ambition and motivation on a Wednesday afternoon after 5 hours of zoom calls that you do on a Monday morning etc? If you do that is very impressive and i would love to get coaching from you, because i do not, and my colleagues absolutely do not! My motivation/effort fluctuates throughtout the week on what is important on my to-do-list. Footballers are always going to 'prioritise' one tournament over another, the question in this thread being which one, IMO it should be the cups because i want loads of good days out.

I’m afraid I respectfully disagree.

If you’re comparing it to me the I’m in an emergency service so yes, when I’m on a shout I have no option but to give 100% mentally and physically so resolve the issue.

Ultimately, and without trying to be dramatic; people’s lives/property/business continuity/environment all depend on it.

Granted, my

motivation might wane when we’re in the middle of the millionth training drill/lecture/PowerPoint of the year. But that’s in training - you can’t give 100% in training otherwise you’re burnt out when it’s time to go.

If I’m a footballer that’s where I’d expect them to not be at 100% too. Training, particularly in-season should be much less than 100% - especially when games are coming thick and fast.

They’re at their sharp end for a 90-100 minutes period, twice - maybe three times - a week. If I’m their coach I’d expect 100% focus and effort during that time.

I’m not expecting a win every week, that’s unrealistic, but I’d be furious if they ever take their foot off the gas and throw away any League/Cup matches. Competitors are designed to win.

They’re compensated for what they can do in that 90minutes, not the training in between.

Same as I am compensated for what my team and I does when we get that call, not sitting in a lecture telling me the same old training packages over and over again.

That’s a great point and I didn’t think of it that way, in terms of a footballers job being more than just match day. They can be unmotivated/shirk off somewhat during training, but for matches, whatever the tournament, opposition etc it needs to be 100% as a given. I suppose it’s similar for me, I switch off during internal non value add time sap catch up calls on zoom. But when the big clients want things done, they have to get done quickly and perfectly at any time it day, otherwise I’m a goner.

It's a question of 5 million here or there. Gone in 30 seconds of transfer negotiation.
