GREATEST EVER....LCFC WINGERS

I always think there are some nostalgic blue tinted glasses with Glover. When I used to watch him he only seemed to have about one good game in three or four.

There was a casual attitude with a number of the players - chiefly some of  the London imports, plus Elvis and the Birch. The skills were there but the commitment wasn't and I believe there was also a dressing room rift - or so I heard from an apprentice player there.

Same with most of the Bloomfield side. We'd go on terrible runs under Bloomfield - pretty sure some of our longest winless runs etc. still stand from the Bloomfield side and most seasons we were either battling relegation or just keeping our head above the relegation fight.

We did have a good season where we finished 7th in 76 but even that season we were draw specialists and didn't score that many but just ground out a lot of 0-0s and 1-1s - we actually only won 13 out of 42 league games that season and finished on a negative goal difference. Almost everyone in that Bloomfield side was very inconsistent and a sort of 1 game in 3 or 1 game in 4 type player - including Weller and Worthington.

We did go on some winless runs, and certainly drew too many, which overall probably cost us a place in Europe a couple of times,  but i can only think of the 74-75 Season when we were seriously in danger of going down, and then the astute signing of Chris Garland turned our season around.

The following season we finished 7th as you rightly say, but in 74 when we got to the FA Cup Semi Final, we were actually in contention for a top 5 place until about the time of the quater Final, then our league form dipped, whether that was due to the Cup run and later Semi Final loss taking the focus off the league i`m not sure.

Bloomfield got sacked because the fans expectations had risen to "we should be qualifying for Europe", and in his final Season we were about 6th with 10 games to go and looking good for a Europeon spot, then a run of draws, and a shocking 5-0 loss to West Brom, which started a losing run at the end meant we finished 9th and no where near.

I remember the Bloomfield out shouts in the last game at home to Leeds, a Wednesday night i think, and you just knew he was going to be gone.

The next season showed what a terrible decision it was, when we got relegated.

No way would we have gone down under Bloomfield.

The Bloomfield era is remembered fondly by most of us that remember it for the football, which was truly beautifull at times, on pitch`s that resembled ploughed fields.

We wasn`t alway scintilating, and could stink the place out at times, but when we were on it, we were a joy to watch under Bloomfield.

Actually, hadn't thought about it like that but looking back I think you're quite right.

When you look at that list we have been blessed with some really talented wingers over the years. For me Mahrez tops the list as arguably the most skilful city player ever. I really liked Howard Riley who played on the right wing when I first started watching city. Years later I taught with Howard at Fullhurst College where he taught PE and games. He remains a real gentleman and lifelong city fan to this day still attending home matches.

Jackie Sinclair was brilliant for a time , very fast and often lethal. Going back even further Derek Hogg was sometimes almost Tom Finney like in his dribbling ability.

Missed Sinclair out in an earlier post.

50 goals in two seasons wasn’t it during the mid sixties. He was a real talent and knew where the net was. Was a shame when he left.

My top three for what they are worth.

Mahrez - that kid is just different gravy.

Guppy - We've never had a better crosser in my time watching us. He was too good to have only got 1 cap.

Dyer - Probably one of my favourite players. Loved watching him play. He always gave everything. Him and Schlupp on the left.....good times.
