GREATEST EVER....LCFC WINGERS

Recommended Posts

Peter Weir.  A shining light of genuine talent amongst a sea of dross at the time.  Proper old fashioned get to the by-line and sling it in type, great with both feet.  Remember hearing an interview where he said his Dad used to tie his right leg to the washing line so he could only use his left

Don't really get why this has gotten "sad" and "haha" reactions - Barnes is the 3rd best winger of ours from the 21st century after Mahrez and Albrighton. As someone who's supported the club since 2008, he would be in my personal "greatest LCFC wingers of all time". Don't see why it's supposedly a funny choice.

Absolutely. He’s a better shout than Lloyd Dyer for example, who as much as I loved, was only great for us in the Championship. But I have no problem people mentioning Dyer.

In the 21st century, it should surely be:

1. Mahrez

2. Albrighton

3. Barnes

4. Dyer

5. Knockaert

Do you remember any details?

My Dad was a West Ham fan and saw a lot of games I his younger years. When I mentioned a few of the old Leicester Internationals he recalled Len Barry. Hugh Adcock and Sis Bishop. Mind you he was even bigger boxing fan fan and went to the Blackfriers Ring and said the Granby Halls in Leicester saw some big fights. Fan of Jack Kid Berg and Ted Kid Lewis

I like Barnes. Hopefully will only get better.

Mahrez is world class and in a league of his own but Lenny Glover was one of my idols as a kid - an old-fashioned winger who could dribble and skin a full back alive. What a player! I also appreciated 'Stringy' who, in the latter part of his career, got dog's abuse from fans but was seriously underrated. Honourable mention to Steve guppy - perhaps the best crosser of a ball ever to wear a Leicester shirt. Should have been rewarded with an England cap.

Guppy got one England cap under Keegan I believe.

You're probably right tbf, as much as I criticise Barnes he is an example of one of our better wingers.

The only issue is we actually haven't had that many good wingers in the 21st Century.

Mad that Lloyd Dyer is the first player who springs to mind for me.

True definition of a winger though really wasn't he - fast, direct and stuck to the wide areas.

The game has changed though and genuine wingers have really become a rarity now, most teams play 4-3-3 with 3 forwards who cut inside and can rotate position and play more like wide deep lying forwards or number 10s out wide. As full backs are more attacking and tend to take up the wide positions instead.

Barnes is probably the only true winger we’ve had in the past 5 years. Even Albrighton is far more of a wing  back in recent years. Gray as well we played as a winger but I’m pretty sure he came to us as a number 10/deep lying forward

Same with most of the Bloomfield side. We'd go on terrible runs under Bloomfield - pretty sure some of our longest winless runs etc. still stand from the Bloomfield side and most seasons we were either battling relegation or just keeping our head above the relegation fight.

We did have a good season where we finished 7th in 76 but even that season we were draw specialists and didn't score that many but just ground out a lot of 0-0s and 1-1s - we actually only won 13 out of 42 league games that season and finished on a negative goal difference. Almost everyone in that Bloomfield side was very inconsistent and a sort of 1 game in 3 or 1 game in 4 type player - including Weller and Worthington.

Yes..But somehow the individuals brought out some special moments...

O'Farrall  put Glover in midfield & he took a lot of kicking...und took him while to refind his stride

But to me Glover's & Weller's games were often better than the teams, Its Not through Misty bluetinted lenses of time, But at the time, I always said These 2

pulled the Team along & its unfortunate our midfield Couldnt take advantage...and often many said of both, they have to Cross the ball und be in the center to

head the ball...One reason Bloomfield often Moved Weller in the CF ,But he Couldnt be everywhere..!!

I Loved Wortho ,he deserved his England Call up, But he could Really have Quiet periods, whereas back then Glover & Weller Fought Losing battles & often

the consistent lights in our play. We played neat entertaining football, Played some Teams off the park, or went toe to toe with the Top teams

But just couldnt translate the Good Work into goals, often not failing in the last 3rd, But those very last yards..

WBA were the same...

I remember both Cloughie & Revie saying within weeks of each other, that Leicester have the Providers & finishers, But they are 2-4 players ( also Rofe& Whitworth)

But Not at the same time, because they come from the same source...They played nice Football got in behind us, But forgot there is a goal where the intention

is to see it end up in...Allison,Shankley said of Leicester under Bloomfield, a Team who in their Play should end up consistently in Top 6-8, But always find themselves struggling in Bottom 8..They cant find the end product.
