Maddison

There is no way Maddison "wants" a move to Newcastle. He probably just wants the contract Youri was offered last year.

Agreed. Seems very settled with us and in Nottingham, despite the bling he's very down to earth and is vocal about how much he loves being close to Cov still, I imagine that's even more important now he's got a son.

I'm not saying he'll never move obviously, but I think we've got a couple of years from him at least.

Maddison does not want to go to Newcastle. He’s not an idiot, the only team I can see him potentially asking to speak with is Tottenham. As he has his heart set on London.

Explain this one too me then...

He ultimately wants to play in London. That’s about the long and short of it. I know a chap who’s friends with him. And he’s told me numerous times he wants a move to a London club eventually. We were chatting just the other day and he said Spurs sound like they could be interested, that’s the only time I think he will be tempted to move. Otherwise he is happy here, he’s a lads lad and all of his mates are Cov based, so it’s ideal for him, but he is certainly considering his options, but Newcastle isn’t one of them.

I think because Newcastle can pay hideous wages, they think that will be enough to turn players heads. It’s not the early 2000’s anymore. Not all players are driven by money alone.

I wasn't being snarky by the way, genuinely wondered if you knew something lol

London would make much more sense than North given what he currently likes (as you say Cov etc etc) and also his partner being from big city America she'd probably quite like to live down there too.

I don't think there's any doubt Newcastle are bidding.

The doubt is whether they really know what they're doing.

They can't honestly think we'd sell him for anywhere near that sort of money back when the window opened, let alone a week before the season starts when we're still quite likely losing Tielemans too.

Doesn't really make any sense.

It is a bit bizarre because they have Dan Ashworth now. Chelsea are currently the same - appear desperate, scatter gun.

The fact its leaked won't go down well and I don't think Newcastle really gain out of that. So you'd think it's a new contract play or trying to drum up interest for a bigger club to take the bait.

The club are half/half position really - there was a rumour of an extra year clause which if the case makes it far more stronger for us. Like you I just don't see us suicidally being the rash - even if the financial position was dire, you wouldn't sell the guy who makes you click going forward

We're £265m in debt, Top has completely lost interest and we're basically a club in freefall so we're pretty much guaranteed to sell our star players for peanuts.

That seems to be the size of it, according to them.

We are - well we are aware of £217m. It's not uncommon. Newcastle raised some debt last week agreeing a deal with a bank for the equalvent vent of a payday loan.

How do you know this? It’s not that unbelievable is it really. Blue tinted spectacles and all that.

45m second offer....is Newcastle a joke......there desperate for him cos he's such a likable player who gives great interviews that will counter their evil owners that everyone links them with

Seriously the media f***ed us up the last week saying we are in financial trouble and desperate to sell.

If we are not signing anyone we don't need to buy, let's use what we got....we got such a bloated squad

Thing is other clubs are going to look at your situation (trying to offload squad players) and offer below market fees for them, or structuring the deals to get the best deal. They'd be mugs to offer you the going rate for those players, because they know you need to offload them and their wages. We've been in a similar situation (lower standard of player), and have ended up farming players out on loan to lose them for nowt at the end of the season. Nobody will buy Shelvey off us because of his wages. So he'll bimble about the squad, and/or go out on loan until the end of his deal.

The interesting thing for me is that there haven't been "He's not for sale" quotes from higher up that I've seen for Maddison or Fofana. Nor anything about a new deal in the pipeline for either of them.

£60m might be the 'going rate' for good domestic players, I'm baulking at spending £60m up front on Maddison when we could just as easily spend £60m on a structured deal for a better player from abroad. Put it this way, Darwin Nunez went for £67m and he's one of the most highly regarded young strikers in Europe! Is Maddison better than Sterling, Lewandowski, Kounde, Gabriel Jesus, etc.

I don't think he is.

Grealish went for £100m because he was Aston Villa's local boy done good, best player, England's great new hype, moving to Moneybags Man City. Had you bought him, you wouldn't have forked out £100m on him.

Richarlison is mental money, he's good, but Spurs have a habit of paying over the odds for good players.

Rodgers has said categorically that we don't want to sell either Fofana or Maddison - in Fofana's case he's literally come out and said 'he's not for sale', with Maddison he's said 'these aren't the kinds of players we want to sell'.

Clubs can come at us with what they believe are appropriate valuations of our players, or feel like they can take advantage of some kind of perceived weakness, but at the end of the day we have a very impressive track record of securing sales at our valuation, not those of the buying clubs. The only time we've ever really done cut price deals is where players have been absolutely clear they want to leave - Chilwell for example, although that was still £45m. I don't see Fofana or Maddison pushing particularly hard for either of these transfers. Fofana has spoken positively about his relationship with Rodgers, and both he & Maddison are said to be very happy at the club.

In Maddison's case, I do think if it was a London-based CL club, he would probably push for the move - his gf has publicly moaned about feeling isolated from her London friends - but with no disrespect to Newcastle, you can't offer European football, Eddie Howe is doing a good job and there is clearly ambition, but at this moment in time it's a sideways move. It may well happen, but I think if it does, it will be for a significant fee and the move will have to represent a significant wage increase for Maddison.

If Madders wants this move so much he’ll push it through internally. That’s pretty much how transfers work these days. Be very surprised to see him go.

I just wish Rodgers would STFU too. You dont hear the likes of Klopp and Guardiola or indeed most Prem managers waffling on about refreshing the squad and airing the clubs finances in press conferences- im surprised that the club let him get away with his self aggrandising BS
