What pressure would the new leader be under? None from his own party, they have a huge majority and know they have tanked in the polls. Any pressure from the opposition would be dismissed as politicking. Unless the new leader surges in the polls instantly they would be mad to call a snap election. They will just spend the next 2 years arse licking the electorate in the hope of staying in power.

I was thinking pressure from the press and the public. Guess we havent been in this position in a while as Tories have always been ahead in the polls in each leadership change, last time we've had a new leader when polls have fallen for those in charge was when Brown was in charge I guess he lasted 2-3 years. So on reflection unfortunately you might have a point....

Sorry, my taxi driver this morning said he feels sorry for Boris and was being genuine, so clearly there are some out there who have lost their mind... it was a long journey.

Infairness on a genuine human level, I do have a bit of sympathy for him on how bad this genuinely has been, despite me very much enjoying it.

Best prime minister... Ever? Stabbed in the back by professional jealousy, sad!

Best at what?

Alienating MPs?

Inciting a culture of abuse?

Ruining our economy?

Mishandling a pandemic?

Demonstrating how not to wear a tie?

After all this mayhem, surely the Tories won't allow Bozo to remain caretaker leader/PM until a new leader is elected, which will probably take until September?

Would be the first known example of someone being simultaneously a loose cannon and a lame duck - and a self-focused narcissist  at that....at a time when there are big decisions to take over cost of living, potentially events in Ukraine etc.

Mind you, whoever is interim PM will face that: e.g. could be Raab, as Deputy PM, dealing with those issues. Plus, whoever is PM for the next 2 months will have to assemble a cabinet. But who? Reappoint those who've just resigned, appoint new ministers, some of whom are candidates for PM?

Hard to see how calm and unity is established among the Tory MPs. There'll be vitriol between those who stayed loyal to Bozo and those who brought him down, not to mention all the political disagreements between Thatcherite tax-cutters and populists and/or One Nation types wanting to do more to alleviate the cost of living crisis.....all whipped up to fever pitch by the personal rivalries and betrayals of an ongoing leadership election....

Meanwhile, we could presumably hear from Durham Police about the Starmer investigation some time soon....

If I hear "he got the big calls right during the pandemic" ONE MORE ****ING TIME

Yeah it's pretty funny, pretty much everyone on either fence thought he did a shocking job, saying that I will give him a little credit on not caving in for the 4th lockdown they wanted

Watching Michael Heseltine on Sky News, being interviewed by Kay Burley, he's telling it like it actually is - Brexit and its initiators and fulfillers/implementors have proved disastrous. He also cites Starmer as foolish for coming out with the statement he did a few days ago - wrong-footing himself over staying out of Europe.

If they weren't 'past it' Heseltine or Clarke would bring some sense back to the Tory Party-in-government.

Granted, i thought the same when she stole my milk when i was at school and cost a lot of my mates their jobs but i'm not on about that, she had a strong character and led the country on moral principles, which is what the country needs right now.

Does Michael Gove get his job back then ?

Sacked by the bloke who is quitting hours later (well not leaving till the Autumn)

Heard a lovely comment by a Been newscaster being interviewed on ITV. To paraphrase, 'Gove is like the good friend who goes to Johnson with a bottle of whisky and a revolver. Johnson drinks the whisky but turn the revolver on Gove'. Magic!

Starmer was right too, with how unstable this country is at the minute, to bring a potential bid to be back in the EU will only cause further division

There will be too much pressure on a new leader not to call a GE within 6-9 months of being leader so maybe we're looking at winter or spring 2023.

I hope not. Though it probably depends on who wins the leadership contest. Personally I’m hoping for someone who isn’t a populist has integrity and is Conservative not Consocialist, I accept It’s probably a big ask. But with a fair wind it could happen.

I feel sorry for people who genuinely think this.

This is the legacy of Johnson and his regime. They have single handedly debased both politics and trust in politics. Anything that makes people dismiss politicians as "they're all the same" is hugely damaging to democracy.

This isn't just Johnson though, Cameron's finances, Blair's warcrimes, this is indicative of our political class, we need a reset across the board

That's absolutely true. I believe, at this point, the voting system needs to be changed to PR. That hands over a lot more responsibility to the actual decision makers, the voters. They cannot then say it's not their doing when this kind of downfall happens.

We need considered government - where policy is discussed seriously by all parties and decided on its merits rather than its ideology. Consensus is essential in a country which has hitherto been divided by lies and propaganda.
